That's the quote I heard although I didn't remember who said it and what the situation was. Either Ebbert was horribly wrong or lying. Either way, if the Feds took his statement at face value I can understand why they would have been slow to respond.
Lesson learned: Don't rely on the competence or truthfulness of local and state officials. Distrust and verify.
