Massive anti-terror demonstration held in Volgograd
VOLGOGRAD. Sept 11 (Interfax) - About 50,000 Volgograd residents have held an anti-terror demonstration, a spokesman for the city authorities told Interfax.
The demonstrators linked hands, forming a forty-kilometer long human chain. The phrase "We Choose Peace!" was stitched onto their jackets in large letters, the spokesman said.
The demonstration was timed to commemorate the terrorist attack in New York on September 11, 2001 and protest global terrorism, he said.
The demonstration was organized by the city's culture department, education and youth affairs committees, the city authorities' information department and the Young Guard youth movement and was joined by schoolchildren, students, representatives of public organizations and passers-by. It lasted for 20 minutes.

Wonder if this is the same Volgograd that was once called Staingrad. If so I'm sure memories run deep on the subject of terror.

Anything remotely like this in the U.S. today? Seems like the Russians get it. Somehow the U.S. has forgotten what we suffered on 9/11/01. Seems like the media has been successful in keeping the scenes from the horrible day from being shown. I still remember the video of people on fire jumping from the windows to their certain deaths. I remember the night we arrived in NYC in March, 2002. It was the first night NYC turned on the twin tower of lights in remembrance. I remember the St. Patrick's Day parade and seeing all the NYPD, NYFD, and NYTPD carrying pictures of their dead comrades. There was spontaneous singing of patriotic songs that day. The crowd went wild when Mayor Guillani and Gov. Pataki came walking down the street. The unity was palpable. What happened to that? Are we that shallow and self serving that 4 years after people like Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda, and Howard Dean muster a following with the vile comments and demands for capitulation spewing from their mouths?
I pray every day that this country have the will, courage and strength to defend itself against those that want us all dead. May we never forget.
