(Subtitle: A new NEWSWEEK poll suggests President Bush could become Katrina’s next casualty.)

Hurricane Katrina claimed her first political casualty Friday. Michael Brown, the head of FEMA, the federal disaster readiness and response agency, was sidelined from the largest disaster relief project in the nation’s history. Brown was recalled to Washington by his boss, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. But a new NEWSWEEK Poll suggests the post-Katrina political storm may just be rising. And her ultimate casualty could be President George W. Bush.

You have to read way, way down in the article to find:

"The president and the GOP’s greatest hope may be, ironically, how deeply divided the nation remains, even after national tragedy. The president’s Republican base, in particular, remains extremely loyal. For instance, 53 percent of Democrats say the federal government did a poor job in getting help to people in New Orleans after Katrina. But just 19 percent of Republicans feel that way. In fact, almost half of Republicans (48 percent) either believes the federal government did a good job (37 percent) or an excellent job (11 percent) helping those stuck in New Orleans.

Not surprisingly, the Democrats are more forgiving of local and state governments (the New Orleans mayor and Louisiana governor are Democrats), though Democrats are not as forgiving as Republicans are of the Feds. More than a quarter (28 percent) of Democrats either believe the state and local governments did a good job (24 percent) or an excellent job (4 percent.) While 30 percent of Democrats believe the local and state governments did a poor job, 43 percent of Republicans believe the state and local officials did a poor job. (Thirty-five percent of Democrats and 29 percent of Republicans say they did a fair job.)"

I only went looking for the article because I flipped into CNN....10:15 PM

Live on a Saturday night

and there he was, Bill Schneider, gleefully eulogizing the presidency of George Bush by describing this gloom and doom poll.

What was the respondent breakdown of this poll?

Why are they 10 points off of other polls?

Never mind, it's Newsweak.

What? They don't think he's going to win re-election or something?

Nesweak is the most blatantly liberal of the 3 major newsweeklies. Mabry is and was and always will be a liberal hack.

This is just his wasteful, wishful thinking.

Unfortunately for the reading public, his own job is secure.

If I were George W. Bush, I'd be fifty times more worried about the price of gasoline than about being blamed for Katrina.

The Media is orgasmic in their belief they can use this disaster to make Bush look bad. Since before the day Bush went into office its been a constant attack by the liberal media. They have lost all credibility. How can America survive with a Media that thinks they should control the Government.

These MSM hacks are really ticking me off! I'm beginning to think there is something mentally wrong with all these liberals.

One thing I learned from Clinton (proving you can learn something from anybody): Polls don't mean anything. It just doesn't MATTER what the polls are. Clinton completed his 8 years, and so will W.

The democrats and the media are obsessed with approval ratings anad such, but the President governs on both what he promised and what's good for the country.

Schneider can squirm with glee about the poll, but it's not going to change a darn thing. And I doubt that Katrina affects the 2006 election, either. By then the recovery will be well underway, and people in most parts of the country will be more concerned about other issues.

It is amazing to me how much pollsters have assumed influence amongst the political class; they strongly resemble the mystics of a couple of thousand years ago who read chicken entrails. The chicken entrails were probably more meaningful.

When are the press and the American people going to realize that this republic has a president not a dictator that runs every little thing in this country? I am so sick of the press. Like I said before...screw them. They are a bunch of democrat hacks and they wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them in the face! Idiots!!

I am beginning to think that most liberal rags in America are now being underwritten by the oil money of our enemies. When money is your god, you will go to great lengths to destroy your soul for it.

I hope this is a lesson to the White House.
The Mr Rodgers crap has to stop.
They need to kick a and take charge and not worry about offending the Democrats and the media.
I swear, I think the DNC operates the WH communications office and advises President Bush and everyone on down,
to act like a bowing and scraping, mea culping, punching bag.

Lets listen to a person who was right there during all this. "I don't know her name, but she works for MSNBC. My apologies for my wordage, but this wench didn't know what the hell was going on. She made up 75% of what she was saying and exaggerated about 95% of everything that she did know. The message: do you want to be a reporter? All you need to do is have a pretty face and buy a Thesaurus!"
That quote comes from about photo #181 of this slide show.

http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Uc=14ewb3ap.b147fdut&Uy=nyvoby&Ux=1

Look at the ratings of the coverage. I see MSNBC as a casualty of Katrina.

This poll was taken on Thursday and Friday, Sept 8 and 9. That would be 3-4 days after the hurricane hit, and people were still in the Super Dome and Convention Center.

With all the anti-Bush hype from the MSM, it's a wonder Bush's numbers were even this high.

What a difference a few days of facts might do to a poll.

Thanks for the info.

/////////

The whole Michael Brown push was as a surrogate for GWB. They have been aiming for him since Nov 8 2000. Now they are blinded out of all contact with reality in their desire for his removal from the White House.

Bush should just have a press conference and say this "TO all my fellow americans. I am above the finger pointing and blame game. To end all of this politica back stabbing, I will effectively resign as President and give the reigns to Dick Cheney. I will let the political class fight among themselves as I have tried all I can to bring this country together with no avial. Hopefully, with me gone, the country can find the unity it needs. Thanks and God Bless America"

I think that would be nifty.

Actually that should read; "NEWSWEEK HOPES that President Bush could become Katrina's next casualty."
