The government made a huge mistake in giving money to the families of the 911 victims. At the time I said it would really up the ante on expectations on anyone on the recieving end of a terror attack or huge disaster.
Charity is aok and should be encouraged. A government award wasn't.
Sorry if it makes me unpopular.
I'm with you. There should never have been such a give away. Should the gov pay every family that loses a loved one in an unexpected terrible act, terrorism, accident, nature? How about some innocent sitting at home who is shot by a break in robber, doesn't that family deserve as much from the government, they lost their provider?
I agree. In fact, I was downright ticked about the government giveaway for 9-11-01. I can't remember the numbers involved, but the public opened their hearts and wallets to give an incredible amount to the victims. Then, the government stepped in dwarfing into insignificance the large amounts donated. I thought it was a slap in the face of all those who had given. It said, "You, the public, aren't generous enough. We need to show you how to really open up your wallets and give by taxing you to do it right."
It raises a question: Why would anyone donate to a relief agency anymore if your are going to be forced to give via taxation in an amount that will dwarf your voluntary contribution? The only answer that makes sense is: Give so you feel good. In other words, giving is no longer driven by a desire to help, but rather by a desire to feel good about giving.
The 911 families extorted the money from the taxpayers, in order to keep the families from bankrupting the airlines. They make me sick.
You are right todays "victims" many of their own design, want aboard the same gravy train.
I am not donating any more as I all ready gave at the IRS.
