Russia, U.S. to conduct joint military exercise next year (in Moscow!)

MOSCOW, September 9, (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Land Forces and the U.S. Army will conduct a joint military exercise in the Moscow military district in 2006, a Land Forces spokesman said Friday.

The official said the preparation and active phase of the exercise would be discussed during the September 11-13 visit of a U.S. military delegation headed by Commander of United States Army, Europe (USAREUR) General B.B. Bell to Moscow.

During the visit, General Bell will meet with Commander of the Russian Land Forces Colonel General Alexei Maslov to discuss the exercise and future cooperation between the Russian Land Forces and the USAREUR.

Bell will also visit headquarters of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts and the War History Museum of Armored Vehicles and Equipment in Kubinka near Moscow.

The general's wife will visit a secondary school attended by Russian officers' children and meet with the wives of the officers from the Moscow military district.

The cultural program of the visit includes sightseeing tours of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

I have heard that the US and China have done wargames together as well (and are planning some in the future). Any idea when this last happened?

I heard that the Russian-Chinese war games a few weeks ago were meant as a show of force against US advances into Central Asia, or something to that effect...

Seems the Russians are playing both sides.

I don't think the joint games we have planned are going to be the same size as the ones that China had with Russia. And as I said, we have done wargames/antiterror stuff with the PRC as well.

They have not been that big, but we have done some antiterror drills with them.

This is the first I have ever heard of the US having wargames with the PRC. Link or evidence please?

If you all have ever listened to the Art Bell, George Nuery late night radio show, then you'd probably think the US, China, Russia, India, Japan, UK, Saudi, Israel, Egypt et al were considering an unspoken common enemy.

considering an unspoken common enemy.

Thought did cross my mind. Seems pretty far fetched.

Seems that we did some anti terror training with Russia about the same time we went into Afghanistan.

It was more than anti terror training. They helped us in Afghanistan with supplies and tank crews to support the Northern Alliance. I also have more than a strong suspicion there is more cooperation than we are hearing in the WOT.

It seems like Russia would be well served to allign himself with the US rather than the EU. I think that would benefit both countries greatly. A great source of oil in change for consumer products.

We also work with China on the Muslim extremists in the Western part of the PRC, as many of them are part of Al Queida.

There may, in the future, be a joint US/PRC/RF antiterror operation.

I'm all for closer ties with Russia. In fact I would be thrilled to see much of our business intrests pulled out of China and sent to Russia. I assume it would be more expensive doing business with Russia but it's a freer country than China and that's important to me.
