(Washington) -- U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is suggesting that early mistakes in predicting the path of Hurricane Katrina may be a symptom of lost focus at the National Weather Service. Santorum, who introduced legislation earlier this year to curb the output of government weather forecasters, says tracking life-threatening weather must be central to what the agency is doing. 00149_ric09d.mp3 Asked about Katrina by WITF, Santorum described weather service warnings for Florida, where the storm first made landfall, as not sufficient." Santorums bill instructs the government to abandon weather prediction and data reporting efforts that duplicate private-sector activity. He came under fire when it was revealed that the head of State College-based AccuWeather, which would benefit, has given his campaigns thousands of dollars.

This guy is a complete idiot! I can't believe anyone supports this clown.
Finally - somebody pointing fingers at weathermen. These a--holes are wrong all of the time. Throw them in jail!
Max Mayfield was pulling his hair out trying to get people to listen to him.
Santorum's off the mark on this one.
Hi trollboy!
IB4TZ
A look at the live threads shows that the public (us) had all the information they needed to make informed decisions. Santorum is pandering for a well-heeled constituent. Time to write Nellie and Martinez as well as Harris to make sure they are on the right side of this. A firm STFU from the Florida delegation is needed.
Hurricanes change directions, much like Rick Santorum.
The boy wonder is now a big disappointment.
Next.
Buh-BYE, Troll!!
I smell kitten food .....
2nd article I've read today that make me wonder what Santorum's trying to gain by this kind of grandstanding.
Soon to be teaching Political Science at Punxsutawney Community College, former Senator Rick Santorum.
What a tool.
Sounds like the kind of crap Isaac Cline took for Galveston. Weather is not an exact science, and it seems to me they ended up getting the track pretty much right.
Welcome to FR. Thanks for posting this non-story.
Hello, newbie.

Yes, these incompetent weathermen should be hung. If they were any good, they would have a better working relationship with....MOTHER NATURE. Then they would have the inside scoop they need to be 100% accurate in their forecasting....just total incompetence!
I totally disagree. Look at Ophelia now turning cartwheels out in the Atlantic. You can't predict where a hurricane is going to go and Katrina is the perfect example as to why the NWS has to cry "wolf" so often when it turns out not to be as bad as predicted.
Medicine is not an exact science either. Does that mean we should not have doctors studying medicine and warning people of potential dangers?
