FEMA Chief Relieved of Katrina Duties

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 2 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown is being removed from his role managing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, The Associated Press has learned.

Brown is being sent back to Washington from Baton Rouge, where he was the primary official overseeing the federal government's response to the disaster, according to two federal officials who declined to be identified before the announcement.

Brown will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad w. Allen, who was overseeing New Orleans relief and rescue efforts.

Brown has been under fire because of the administration's slow response to the magnitude of the hurricane. On Thursday, questions were raised about whether he padded his resume to highlight his previous emergency management background.

Less than an hour before Brown's removal came to light, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Brown had not resigned and the president had not asked for his resignation.

McClellan did not directly answer a question about whether the president had full confidence in Brown.

"We appreciate all those who are working round the clock, and that's the way I would answer it," he said.

Funny, they didn't look at his resume when he handled the 4 hurricanes in Florida last year.

There were FEMA-caused delays last year also.

But Jeb is an outstanding crisis manager and was able to see that assistance came to affected Floridians in spite of the fedgov.

Agreed.

The President's main place is in the W.H. he designates people to be on scene for him. Techically That is all that is happening here. he's going back to Washington to manage the sum of the efforts from his office while a point person is on ground. So, the media is not painting this accurately, as is to be expected.

Foxnews is now saying that his job in New Orleans is being turned over to the Deputy Adm Allen of the Coast Guard and Brown is simply returning to Washington....no confirmation that he is being replaced as the head of FEMA.

The Administration just admitted all responsibility for the local problems in Louisiana with this move

Hardly. The may have accepted responsibility for their portion of the blame which is more than the Dems are doing. The guy had to go. Bad enough that he did poor job. But then to have to defend him for lying to get the job. No way Jose. Get a real manager in there with command authority. All lawyers do is look for ways to cover their asses.

Time Hit Piece:

BACKTRACKING [Jonah Goldberg]

Some of Time's sources are revising and extending their remarks. An excerpt:

Claudia Deakins, Edmond's director of marketing and public relations, was quoted in the Time article as saying that Brown was not a manager but more like an intern. Brown was assistant to the city manager in Edmond from 1977-80.
However, this morning, Deakins disputes Time's quotes attributed to her.

"I spoke with two reporters from Time Magazine Thursday. I answered questions about the City of Edmond, the organizational structure and role of the city manager and his staff. My comments were in the context of the organization as it functions today. I explained that my employment with the city of Edmond began in 1997, several years after Michael D. Brown's employment by the city and that I could not speak to the specifics of the organizational structure as it was during that time. I also explained that I could not I speak to the details of Mr. Brown's role within the organization.

"The only people who can speak with authority with regard to Mr. Brown's position in the organization are those who were at the City of Edmond during that time and worked with Mr. Brown, such as the city manager or members of the city council.

"I regret any misunderstanding that may have occurred as a result of my comments."

Nope it was FEMA's responsibility now and Blanco and the people of NO were victims of the administration's incompetence. He was on vacation afterall! That will be the story as the Dems and the MSM rewrite history again.

That's the story from now on. Along with

Tax Cuts for the Rich
Blood for Oil
Bush Lied People Died
Bush and his Big Oil Cronies
Stole the 2000 election
Abuses the military
Plame affair
Destroys the environment.

I think the frustration is that the Whitehouse doesn't defend itself.

Bob Livingston resigned before Clinton's impeachment. That did alot of good.

" Still, Brown appears to be indecisive. With him gone, and Democrats left to defend their two incompetents, How does this make Bush look bad?

It makes it look like both Brown and Bush failed to provide a decent, respectable response and thus lends credance to the left's BS. Brown is in no way indecisive. The problems in LA are the sole result of LA and national liberals. Their actions are the only reason Brown popped up on the radar screen anyway.

Either you left off the sacrasm tag, or you're new hobby is cutting off your nose to spite your face. If the man is not qualified, and lied to get the position, he needs to go. Does that excuse what Nagin and Blanco did (or failed to do)? Not at all. But we're a bit above keeping an incompetent liar in a position for which he's supremely unqualified just because the other side does it too. Or at least, we should be.

There are areas in Mississippi that are damaged and have still not seen hide nor hair of FEMA. Maybe that situation will improve shortly.
