Then pray tell what those storage vessels are doing in the inundated area? They are very visible on TV. Judging by their size they are not crude storage tanks but appear to be chemical storage tanks. They are located near the river levee and could therefore be a shipping or receiving facility.
I understand that the chemical industry is more upstream from NO and that the river levee remained intact. Then how did all these chemicals end up in the flood water? Don't tell me that the water from lake P. was that polluted. I think that the chemical content in the flood water originates from facilities installed inside the flooded area.
During the rise in water level, the tanks may have started to float and connecting lines to/from tanks were ruptured.
I was thinking about that same thing yesterday, as a matter of fact. I am not sure when they plan to 'officially' begin counting the dead, but I find the lack of information somewhat odd.
I'm not an inviro-wacko but that city is....
---->FINI !!<----
Keep the toxins contained inside the levees... why spread it around especially when the former Big Easy is G-O-N-E.
Funny...lol
Hmmmmm That sounds like a liberal...or a Democrat
What matters is that chem storage is always in closed containers. It takes time for processes such as corroison to violate the container.
The flood waters of NO are far from an open sewer and what they do contain is purely natural. Unless you think like city folk.
"oil change facilities with pcp laden used oil...
Oil change facilities are closed and whatever oil exists as a surface coat within the facilities, is far less than the oil slick that is washed into Lake Ponchartrain at each rainfall occurrance. As far as PCBs goes, there are none and those oil shops contain none. I doubt there's any left down there at all.
" fertilizers...pesticides for 1/2 million people...
washed away at each rainfall. ,p> "I guess I could go on and on...but what's the use...it's only rain water...right?"
Right now, yes. It's the equivalent of heavy rains after a long drought.

It will rain. The rain will fill up the bowl and it will overflow. Then it will be a f'n mess. Also, NO is not gone.
The Big Easy has always been a f'n mess.... it's not worth the effort to rebuild...especially with my tax dollars.
Rebuilt, or not, the water can't stay in that bowl. The mess must be cleaned up and something done with the site the NO metro sits on. The sooner the water is pumped out into the Lake, the less damage will be caused all around.
After what the HURRICANE did to cars, trucks, boats, BRICK buildings, The Super Dome...etc I suggest chemical containers are not invulnerable

Take that swim.

REALLY???

I'm Sorry, Spunkets..All used oil contains PCB's
I don't simply suggest, I'm sure you are not a scientist and have no hands on experience with these things at all.
Re:The flood waters of NO are far from an open sewer
"Take that swim."
I already have in worse than you suppose. You assume to much.
"REALLY???"
Yes.
"I'm Sorry, Spunkets..All used oil contains PCB's"
They do not. Your statement simply indicates that your know niether what a PCB is, or what they were used for. Here's a clue. They're polychlorinated biphenyls used in electrical apps as chemically stable, insulating dielectric oils with very high breakdown voltage. Their use was discontinued a long time ago.
$59 Billion for what...
"Chicago the only city more corrupt than NOLA" Well Chicago is much bigger, and much of it's gov't runs better than NOLA's. So on a per capita basis NOLA is more corrupt, Chicago keeps it's title as 'The Second City.'
I'm not not trying to urk you.
Who told you the water was contaminated and to what standards?
I'm just trying to understand.

A medical doctor on Fox News ...(I believe it was Fox because I seldom watch any other news outlet) ... stated, to the effect, the water is of such toxicity that just incidental contact with the skin could cause conditions with very serious consequences.
I trust this will put this thread to bed.
Thank you.
You were wrong!!
You bit on what the media was telling you.
The water is not a toxic soup that will kill you.
I used to dive for the Navy in more toxic water than that.
All I needed was a gamma globulin shot.
NO BIG DEAL. I , trust you won't put it to bed but investigate before YADDA YADDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
