Democrats Loybbing Iraq War Veteran Paul Hackett To Challenge Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH)
The Hill ^ | September 8, 2005 | Peter Savodnik

Posted on 09/08/2005 7:20:49 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Brian Nick, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, shrugged off talk of Hackett unseating DeWine, noting that Democrats had failed to recruit any “top tier” candidates. Reps. Brown and Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) earlier declined to challenge DeWine.

as much as DeWine is hated on FR, it will be very hard for the Democrats, even with the GOP having Taft, to unseat DeWhiner.

DeWine got a big break when Congressman Tim Ryan decided not to run. But I don't rule out a victory by Hackett. In a recent Survey USA poll, DeWine had an approval rating of 42% and a disapproval rating of 43%.

Will he run ads implying that he is the Republican and DeWine endorsed him?

Didn't the other RINO Ohio senator get something like 65% of the vote in 2004?

I don't think DeWine has much to worry about.

As much as we have grievances against DeWine we will still support him against any democrat.

Voinovich has always been semi-popular in Ohio.

He was, if not a good Governor, at least a Governor who didn't get caught with his hands in the cookie jar like Taft was.

DeWine very unpopular here. I can't support a Liberal Democrat against him- But I also can't bring myself to vote for DeWine again. I just wish someone - any Republican -would run against DeWine in the Primary. Then we would have a Real Republican in the Primary running aginst a Psuedo- Republican. Won't give the party a penny until DeWine and Voinovich and Taft have retired.

Damn it.

I beg the Dems to reconsider. If they do that DeWine will win. Hell, no one has been on DeWine's back more than me but their best choice is a younger John Kerry? bad as he screwed up on the filibuster, the war will trump it. An anti war activist is unacceptable.

I still want DeWine gone, though, and hoping some Rep stands up to defeat him.

If I sound like I sort of want the Dems to win, well, honestly? I want DeWine gone. I want to send a signal to RINO's , preferably in the primary but general if I have to. But I have certain levels I won't sink too and a anti war Kerry Jr. trumps as more unacceptable then a backstabbing Judas on judges.

After I made my post I wasn't sure I should have done it but we just can't let democrats beat us. Sometimes one just doesn't know what to do.

I would like to see DeWine depart after a primary challenge. Hackett could be a headache for pubbies in Ohio with certain one issue voters.

Now Democrats are training their sights on DeWine. The senator alienated conservatives earlier this summer — first backing a bipartisan judicial-nominees pact and then opposing a gun-liability bill pushed by the National Rifle Association. Ohio Gov. Bob Taft (R), meanwhile, is under an ethics investigation; Democrats have promised to tie DeWine to him.

What makes Hackett so attractive, Democrats say, is his strong fundraising potential — Schulman said he garnered nearly $900,000 for the abbreviated special election — his colorful story and his willingness to speak his mind, like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Also, like Democratic Senate hopeful Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Hackett is clearly to the right of his party’s leadership, at least when it comes to the Second Amendment. “The Democratic Party is wrong on guns,” he said.

If Hackett is all we they have Deweenie wins, and I say this as an anti-Dewine, ant-Taft, anti-RINO, Ohio Republican.

I liked how they credited Hackett as beinga "good fundraiser" when in fact the money was there anyway and he was simply the choice of the money to run.
