Al-Qaida's spectacular 'Ramadan Offensive'

WASHINGTON – Raising new concerns about the use of weapons of mass destruction by terrorists, al-Qaida is planning spectacular attacks next month against the U.S., Russia and Europe in what it is calling the "Great Ramadan Offensive."

The offensive, designed to overshadow the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and the Pentagon, was first referenced in a May 30 letter written by al-Qaida's Iraq commander Abu Musab Zarqawi to Osama bin Laden. It is the subject of a report written by terrorism expert Yossef Bodansky, the former director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, to government officials.

Ramadan, the holiest period in the Muslim calendar, begins Oct. 4 this year and lasts a month.

Let's see now, just which of its many attacks did al-Qaida publicize in advance prior to this. Now, which ones came as a surprise?

excessive Y2K survival packs

Didn't they relabel those as "nuclear attack preparedness packs"?

There needs to be some sort of a plan in the books to totally eliminate I-slam from the planet, and these fools need to be made to understand that any further large terrorist acts on American soil will cause that plan to be implemented.

Minimally, the plan needs to include the total destruction of Mecca and Medina, the banning of all islammic practices throughout the world, and the bombing with smart weaponry of all mosques, maddrassas, and any other islammic buildings which did not have Christian crosses placed over them the next morning.

You hope they are typical of the check-out line news. What if they get it right this time?

Do they have Ramadan Inns in the middle East?

Sure do, but the line at the check-in desk is brutal

Is that sort of like Benson, the scientist who knew if he broke wind in the echo chamber, he'd ever hear the end of it?

"The next attack, according to al-Qaida defectors and informants, will take place simultaneously at various sites throughout the country," he writes. "Designated targets include New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Houston, Las Vegas, and Valdez, Alaska, where the tankers are filled with oil from the Trans-Alaska pipeline.

So take a list of cities with high population and list them. And thereby make a credible threat? Believe me, a swarthy middle east male 18 to 45 would stand out like a sore thumb in Valdez.

To orchestrate such an incredible event requires not only the shipment of the nukes into the United States but also the establishment of cells, the training of sleeper agents, the selection of sites, and the preparation of the weapons without detection from federal, state or local law enforcement officials.

These things are exactly the things that they have been failing at since 9/11. Cell after cell is rolled up across the world. Shipment of nukes? First you have to have the nukes!

Unlike 9-11, that cost less than $350,000, this event already has cost a king's ransom, and bin Laden will not waste the billions in expenditures, the years of planning and his coveted 'crown jewels' on an attack that is ill-planned, poorly timed and carelessly coordinated."

Following the money is the easiest thing to do. The bigger the funds transfered the easier it is to follow. These things have to be paid for up front, nobody will let you pay them tuesday for a nuke today. Moving huge sums un-noticed these days is virtually impossible. Even Swiss banks are not safe from government eyes.

The way is see it, this threat is the Al queda equivelent of saying "Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid".

If they had nukes they would have already used them. Why would they wait till AFTER we took Iraq, Afganistan, and rolled up their network every where?

It is a good thing that our leaders will pick NEITHER.

I'd appreciate some input on a more adequate weapon selection then.

Hajj
Arabic: hajj

Pilgrimage in Islam, to Mecca, that is compulsory to Muslims of good health and with sufficient funds to make the journey to Mecca.

Hajj is the highest of all Muslim practices, even if less than 10% of all Muslims ever manage to perform it. In modern times about 2 million Muslims perform the hajj every year, and this number seems to be fairly close to the maximum. Saudi authorities have now put regulations on how many can come from each country, so that anyone who wants to perform the hajj has to apply, and many are turned down.

The hajj is important because it lets the believer come to the place that is both the centre of the world, as well as the place where the divine revelations collected in the Holy Koran started, and continued for about 12 years. But most important, the hajj is a continuation of what according to Islam is one of the oldest true and pure religious rituals (pure in the term that is performed according to God's will).

What the believer does during hajj is to recall what happened to important persons in Muslim history. The rituals performed around the Ka'ba recalls the acts of Abraham and Isma'il when they turned the Ka'ba into the sacred place of worship and peace (Koran sura 2 aya 119). The next act recalls the running of Hajar, when she ran for water for her son.

But following this, and we have now arrived at the core of hajj (the acts above are also performed in the smaller pilgrimage, umra) both the theological and historical background is more unclear. Muslim and Western researchers trace the backgrounds to Muhammad's own performance of the hajj. It is clear that Muslims commemorates Muhammad's acts, but why Muhammad did exactly what he once did, is unclear to modern researchers.

These are the ones that are not obliged to perform hajj at least once during their lifetime: Mad people, slaves, women that are without travelling company (close relative or husband), people without the necessary funds.

Most hajjiyys arrive in Mecca a few days before the hajj proper begins, while some see the opportunity of arriving in Ramadan, the month of sawm, an act which is seen as especially merited. While it is recommended that the hajjiyys should robe themselves in the ihram already at the beginning of the journey, the clear majority puts this on towards the end of the journey to Mecca.

The first that the hajjiyy does is to perform the umra, while the hajj proper starts on Dhu l-hijja. 7. But the umra is by all means understood as a part of the hajj, and many of the symbols connected to hajj are as a matter of fact happenings during the umra.

These are our Allies: Iraqis, Islamists, friends. They have done more to fight Islamic terror than most Americans ever will.
