A Shameless Vanity For A Shameless Senator
Vanity ^ | 8 Sep 2005 | .cnI redruM

If you hate vanities I'll take no offense as you click elsewhere. If you hate the idea of vanity crossbreeding with greed and opportunism of the rankest order, read on and feel your blood boil. Mine hit Fahrenheit 213 when I read that Democratic Senator Charles Schumer was now actively using the aftermath of hurricane Katrina as a partisan fundraising tool.

Tragedies bring out the best in some the worst in others. After this week, I've come to believe that tragedy, like advancing age, just makes us all more of what life has taught us to be. In the case of Charles Schumer, that is truly a crying shame.

In a recent letter on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) urging that FEMA big shot Michael Brown be fired. Had Senator Schumer ended his epistle right there, he may have even gotten bipartisan support from Senator Vitter and Congressman Jindal.

Smarter and more informed individuals than myself have given Mr. Brown less than stellar marks for his handling of the emergencies resulting from hurricane Katrina. Handling emergencies is why FEMA exists. Schumer was not too far off the beam, had he called it a wrap at that point of his epistle.

Where Senator Schumer became morally repugnant was when he coupled his opinions on Katrina with the calls for donations to the DSCC. At this point Charles Schumer was no longer commenting on and lamenting a tragedy. He was milking it. The Good Senator from New York now shared common and dubious moral ground with every looter in New Orleans that left an evacuated Best Buy with the heaviest plasma screen television they could carry.

No matter how bad and improper some aspects of the press coverage of Katrina has been, this incident was an excellent example of the press doing God's work. Within mere hours of The Associated Press questioning the practice of using Hurricane Katrina as a talking point in a fund raising letter, well before the dead were even buried, the DSCC had a spokesman out promising to give every dime raised to The Red Cross.

The aggressive inquisitiveness of a free press solved the immediate problem and turned evil deeds towards a positive result. I hope Charles Schumer just gave The Red Cross a lot of help in ending human suffering. Donate blood anyway, unless that bag of loot from the DSSC slander account isn't adequate to help the miserable.

The long-term problem is more troubling. If Michael Moore is preparing a film, Senator Schumer is writing fund raising letters and Reverend Jesse Jackson is egregiously acting like the man he sees in the mirror over this hurricane, just imagine their cupidity and rapaciousness in the aftermath of a nuclear terrorist attack.

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. We need help taking care of their pets, too.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you. Believe me, there are a lot of organizations who need your help.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas but I'm adding more every night. My wife was down at Reunion Arena in Dallas Tuesday handing out care packages and spiritually ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer. She says that the situation is tragic and that there's a lot of work to be done. There are so many children who don't know where their parents are or even if their parents are still alive.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would appreciate it if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite

I attended a Freep once and Chuckie baby was driving past in a chauferred car - he was pointing his finger towards us and laughing hysterically. Something I'll never forget.

......the DSCC had a spokesman out promising to give every dime raised to The Red Cross.

If anyone believes the DSCC will follow through on that promise, I have some dandy swamp land in Louisiana for sale, just vacated.

Did you hear Pelosi rant the same thing?  She is so pathetic she makes Hillary appear sane.

Not to mention that Hillary is using Katrina to launch her presidential campaign

I tend to ignore the ranting talking points. Occasionally, like a busted watch, someone like Pelosi is accidentally accurate. I'll give her more credit than Senator Scumbag. She wasn't passing the hat while she was passing the gas.

Hence her leadership position.

We can hope though, maybe this AP will stay attuned if he doesn't wind up buried in the other end zone of Giant Stadium from J. Hoffa.

Did you hear Mort on the panel tonight???

Now Mort is what I would define as a moderate but he was slamming into the Dems tonight saying their conduct and speech borders on insane.

The most loathsome, virulently anti-Christian, trial lawyer vermin in the US Senate.

Mort Kandrake is a national treasure. He takes the worst and the most stupid of both parties behind the woodshed and sorts a few things out for them. If Mort is wizzing in their Cheerios, they'd probably better take notice.

No, just got home.  Besides trying to listen to Mort string a complete sentence together always makes me want to stutter.  Not sure why.
