The school bus drivers would be part of the evacuation plan. They would know their duties ahead of time, and make appropriate child care arrangements, just as other first responders would. This isn't rocket science. Other states routinely use school buses in emergencies.

UN-frickin-BELIEVABLE. Intelligent life forms would have gotten people out of there on anything with wheels. I would have said "mobilize every vehicle in the city, no matter what kind, and take the maximimum number of passengers in each out of here NOW." As another poster said, I would have ridden out of there in the back of a dump truck, but the Mayor had to have comfy coaches for his people even if the logistics were IMPOSSIBLE at that point.
"One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."
Nagin described his response:
"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."
While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.
To: InvisibleChurch
Obviously Nagin never took the course titled, "Making do with what you have in an emergency."
Idiot, incompetent sleazbag!

"However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't used hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed." Recall how the *network* a.ka The Associated [quislings] Press worked when it was so eloquently exposed/demonstrated with the gang-bang of the Lib-Socialist idiot photog in NYCity?
Well?
"Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead."
> ! <
"'I need 500 buses, man,' he told WWL. 'One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here.'"
How'd the AP *miss* this crucial *clue* while they covered "The Big Picture"?
Amazing. {scratching head}

Well voila'!!
-Behold-
A Memory Hole in the making.
In the meantime Moveon.org accompanied by NO "refugees" will protest at the WH while enjoying excruciatingly full coverage from?
Yup, none other than.

The thing that is sad and downright maddening, is that he will probably never have to answer for his failures. Neither will the governor. The MSM hatred for Bush will shelter these two losers from any blame, as they have been thus far. They will never be held accountable for the deaths they caused because of their incompetence.
They are both disgusting human beings.

"Instead this dumbass didn't save the buses either and they have to buy their school districts new buses. Capital DUMBASS. Add public transit buses to that shopping list as well. If he didn't want to save the people, he could at least saved the buses. even people sitting on a dry freeway in buses would have been better than sleeping outdoors on them. He SHOULD be fired immediately, and put on trial. But what's he doing? Giving Oprah tours of the dome, blaming Bush for what HE HIMSELF CAUSED!

I bet you that this bottom feeding, racist piece of trash applies for one of those $2000 debit cards that FEMA is giving to all the victims. One? He's probably arragning to get dozens of them in the names of deceased constituents.

NAGIN: I need reinforcements, I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man. We ain't talking about -- you know, one of the briefings we had, they were talking about getting public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out here.
I'm like, "You got to be kidding me. This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."
That's -- they're thinking small, man. And this is a major, major, major deal. And I can't emphasize it enough, man. This is crazy.
Louisiana disaster plan, pg 13, para 5 , dated 01/00
'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'...
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
they're thinking small, man!
small thinking man! small thinking man!

Ray Nagin fails to comprehend that when you're in a hole the first thing to do is to quit digging. And second, if that hole is filling up with water, use whatever ladder you have to get out. Don't wait for a better, more comfortable one.

he didn't care if his own citizens lived or died Why should he? Either way, they'll keep voting for him.

Apparently, then, it wasn't in their plan, although, other posters, have said it was.

I heard the whole interview.
It was amazing. The guy sounded like he had a 5th grade education at best.
The term racist doesn't even begin to cover what this guy was spewing.
You get the government you elect (deserve). One could easily believe that NO is largely populated by utter morons if they elected this doofus as mayor.

Ray Nagin: 5 beers short of a 6-pack.
The greenest butterbar (2nd LT) fresh from his/her commissioning ceremony has more guts and leadership ability than this REMF (that's Rear Echelon MF for you civilian types).

All: This mayor Bling-Bling debacle has a silver lining. It doesn't take much imagination to realize that every mayor in the country is going to be reviewing his/her evacuation and disaster plans. It's unfortunate that so much death and suffering had to happen because of incompetence on the front lines. President Bush said it best: "it takes leadership at the local level."
