Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 11:38 a.m. EDT Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin garnered a ton of publicity with a profanity-laced interview he gave to WWL radio last Thursday, where he blasted President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco for not coming to rescue his city in time.

However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't used hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed.

Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead. "I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin described his response:

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.

Nagin should have left it to the people in the Superdome as to whether they would accept a ride to Houston in a school bus, or whether they wanted to wait for a Greyhound.

Methinks we all know the answer to that one.

That's right. School buses aren't good enough for the residents of NO. But they're good enough for the kids.
/sarcasm
I don't ever want to hear another liberal say they're doing anything "FOR THE CHILDREN"

Ive never driven a school bus but I'll bet I could manage it. Heck a 15 year old kid showed the mayor that it could be done.

Nagin truly is bottom of the barrel, irresponsible liberal trash. His language says volumes about him - utterly disgusting.

Nagin only cares about himself, his graft, and his rapidly dwindling political future.

If he wants to retain any respect from America at all, he should finish up the clean-up and then tender his resignation.

Nagin is right.

It makes much more sense to wait for a Greyhound Bus to come from Seattle or Portland, ME to come and pick me up than to take a ratty school bus from a halfmile away.

Dammit, if these busses were good enough for election night, they were good enough for evacuation. not one penny to replace these busses, nagin threw them away.

This guy in an unbelievable disgrace. He acts as though everyone was supposed to do everything for him and he could just sit back later and criticize others for not having done enough. It is downright shameful.

It is so hard to fathom that I can't even find proper words to describe this man.

Mayor Bling-Bling should have axed Jabbal Gibson about school bus rides to safety.

I know, I know, I don't understand, 'New Orleans is a party town, man'.

The text book definition of the welfare state.

There is a Cat. 5/4 hurricane barreling on it's way, but those buses to get people out must have bathrooms, DVD players, and oh yeah caviar served by Hooter's waitresses would be nice also.

Who would want to drive an un airconditioned school bus, full of evacuees, when you have your own family to take care of? Certainly not the regular school bus drivers, what other city employees would do it? Is it even legal to just hand over the keys to city property to anyone that says they can drive a bus? Who is liable in case of an accident?

Hell, back in the 80s, the Seniors in High School WERE the bus drivers down in rural NC.
