I was stationed at Fairbanks for a few years did the artic survival school when the temps went to 60 below........noothing quiet like a snow cave at -60.....:o)

We were actually fine yet the damn instructors came around to check us every hour.....we finally told em to let us sleep as we were better than fine . Wiggy extreme cold bag and a snow cave was no worse than sleeping at home with the AC on high......we did well !

Also did a bit of time on Shemya out on the end of the chain. Drove my little 4x4 toy truck up to Inukik in the NWT a couple of times....all great memories. If all my sudden stops in life didn't hurt so bad in the cold these days I'd be back in a heartbeat...

Stay safe !

Great to find another who spent time in AK. I have been completely down the thousand miles of the Chain on the the university of AK research vessel Acona, damned thing could roll and yaw in a heavy dew. No ballast and they had cut off the stabilizer fins to achieve a couple knots more speed. The Bering sea was a frightening and nightmarish hell during a storm we went through. I remember it had one of the first GPS systems which was closely guarded as to access.

Dutch Harbor/UnAlaska with the old Russian orthodox churches and talking to long time residents about the Japanese attacks there was fascinating. Local watering hole was named the Elbow Room, and it was not called that on a whim. :>) Cold Harbor was just YUK.
