Is the "war on poverty" a quagmire yet?

"I see the poor as victimized by incompetent Democrats."

It is said that doctors bury their mistakes. Democrats drown theirs.

Gallagher and other leaders of charitable groups met with President Bush on Tuesday to plead for a long-term solution.

No child left behind, protection of marriage, faith based social programs...

A good education, two parent families and moral values are the key to moving out of poverty. Buildings are not the key, building self sustaining individuals is.

"United Way Hopes Poor Seen in New Light"

Looting the most expensive tvs, jewelry, and other material that could be hauled away the first chance they got?

Not exactly seeing them in a new light. More like confirming what I already feared.

The liberals have never been able to figure out one BIG TRUTH - - -

Not having money does not make you POOR!

"This is a wake-up call for America"

Indeed it is... But maybe not the one they're hoping for.

As much as it would be nice to do, you can't make poor people change, no matter how much money you give them. They will continue to make the kinds of decisions that made them poor.

I remember when I was in about 2nd grade, and an epiphany came to me, which was probably paralleling my learning of long division in school. One day I said to my Mom, "why don't they take all of the money and divide it by how many people there are, and give everyone the same? Then there'd be no poor people!" Mom's words are as true today as they were in the 60's... She said "The money would end up right back with the same people who have it today."

Now mom was a very charitable woman, and all six of her children gave an envelope with money in it to the church every Sunday, as did she and dad. And she would never say to turn your back on the needy, but at the same time she understood how the World works better than legions of Communists have ever understood it.

Sometimes mom's are really cool!

People, don't donate to the United Way. They're a bunch of liberals.

C,
I agree, and will add some:

Even with the positive influences you list, there are no guarantees to success. America offers the opportunity for people who wish to take it. Some take it and excel, some take it and fial miserably, many never even try.

But everyone gets the chance.

Second, I think what "poverty" means in America is very, very different from what the word means to most of humanity.

I see the poor in a new light.

They tend to be ignorant. I believe they were the ones who proudly refused to be educated during my school years.

They tend to be overly proud of their victimhood status.

They help elect some of the worst leaders in America.

The United Way Needs To Be Seen In New Light.

As do other top heavy and politically liberal PC "charitable" organizations like the Red Cross. A dollar goes much further for real aid to real people through The Salvation Army and Samaritan's Purse.

It's not so much that those of us who are not poor need to see those who are in a different light. It's that those who ARE poor need to see themSELVES and their OWN lives in a different light.

I saw an article (was it yesterday?) that I meant to read but it got swallowed up, purporting to equate poverty with criminality. IOW, people become criminals because they're poor. That is Marxist BS. People are criminals because they want to be, they've been raised to be, they scorn honest work, and they want to prey on others. They haven't been taught properly, they've been "raised" on the streets without proper upbringing, and the culture around them is toxic. And even then, each individual chooses for him/herself whether to go down the drain or not.

BTW, the little jeremiahs live on less than probably a lot of the poor in NOLA.

Yes, why not give directly to the charity you want to help, instead of letting United Way skim off a portion for their expenses and salaries?

I just saw a piece about the Astrodome being on lockdown because of horrible behavior of people waiting in line for their $2000 debit card. These people do nothing to engender compassion on my part. It is disguting and I have given a small amount for relief but I am saving my charity for an individual. I know I will find one.

Trashing the Superdome and convention center. Those left behind stealing big screen TVs, DVDs, shoes and beer. Attacking hospitals for drugs. Shooting at rescue helicopters, rescue boats and people repairing the canal walls and cell phone towers.

No, it's not a new light. It's just a new 1000 watt bulb in the old socket.

Right or wrong, the images from NO have hardened me beyond the point where I give a damn about the self inflected poor.

Trillions of US Taxpayer and state taxpayer dollars, billions from individual charities and it is still not enough. The vast majority of these people were offered "free" schooling and decided they did not need it and could live off the guilt of the rest of us.

Well I no longer feel guilty.

To those who did their best to contribute to society and just happened to get in the way of this disaster, this is NOT directed at you.

Did anyone see O'Reilly trash that dumber than a rock black woman last night who was trying to blame GWB for not caring about blacks? He cleaned her clock.

Isn't the United Way the "charity" that refuses to give to the Boy Scouts because homosexuals aren't allowed to be alone with young boys?

Exactly! And last year they prosecuted a leader at the Mid-Michigan branch of embezzling over $500,000.00. May never get it all back.
My employer has a United Way push on right now with a goal of 100% participation. My supervsor told our group he'd buy lunch if we hit the goal. I told him save your money........ now the group of sheeple I work with are mad at me. Oh well, I come here to make money, not friends.

"The neglect of the nation's poor"

- This is boloney. The poor have neglected themselves. Especially in this country where government entitlement programs give them free money, free food, free medical, free education w/free lunches and nearly free housing and they still won't help themselves. There are also countless private charities, halfway houses, drug and alcohol counseling, work training programs and mentoring services. Yet they take it all for granted as if we owe them a life. The opportunity for these people to better themselves is all over the place and in their face. This isn't Rwanda…this is America! All they have to do is get off their a$$ and try. WHAT MORE DO WE NEED TO DO FOR CHRISTS SAKE!?

Why don't they try? Why when given free housing projects do they destroy them and make them into crime infested $hitholes? Why when given free educations do they drop out instead of finishing? Why when given free food stamps do they trade them in on the black market for cash to buy booze, drugs or luxury items like rims for their cars instead of feeding their family? Why when given free medical and everything I've mentioned above, paid for by hard working people's taxes of all races, creeds and religions, do they still play the racism trump card, lie, cheat and steal from the very people who provided them the opportunities to do for themselves and do not?

Why are these questions never asked? Because the truth hurts and well all know that telling the truth and hurting the feelings of a black person automatically makes us a racist and a bigot.

Unless you are Bill Cosby http://www.eightcitiesmap.com/transcript_bc.htm
