Passengers subdue man on Frontier flight

Several passengers, including a Hurricane Katrina evacuee, grabbed a violent man aboard a Frontier Airlines flight Tuesday and subdued him, authorities said.

When the plane landed, police found the plane smeared with blood from front to back and Jason Tervort, 26, duct-taped and lying face down in the center aisle.

"They worked him over pretty good," said Denver Police Detective Virginia Lopez. "The passengers did what they had to do."

Flight 147, which had left Houston Tuesday evening, was carrying a number of Hurricane Katrina evacuees, said Monique Kelso, an FBI spokeswoman.

Matthew Meador, 27, a construction worker from Lakewood who was on the plane, said Tervort was acting strangely from almost the moment the plane took off.

According to an FBI arrest affidavit, Tervort got out of his seat shortly after takeoff and began walking "very aggressively" toward the front of the plane. Tervort is accused of pushing and slapping a flight attendant, who called for help.

Several male passengers, including Meador, subdued Tervort as he yelled profanities, spit at passengers and bit them, according to the arrest affidavit.

"It's something I've thought about since 9/11," Meador said. "What would you do if something like that happened? It was surreal."

Others who helped in subduing Tervort included Brad Lewis, 37, a semi-tractor technician from Littleton, and a man who told Meador he had worked at a hotel in New Orleans until the hurricane forced him out. The man told Meador he was traveling to Denver to meet family. Tervort, who authorities said is from Louisiana and recently discharged from the military, faces a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew, records show. Lopez said police have no plans to charge passengers who subdued Tervort with any crimes.

Lewis said he and others taped Tervort's legs to the rails on the underside of the airline seats.

"We just sat there with him the whole time until we landed in Denver," Lewis said. "He was cursing and spitting."

Tervort faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

It was an interesting experience. He used a web cartridge belt that was knotted in the center. I went out in seconds and when I came to I was lying on the deck convulsing, looking up at him. Very surreal.

I am proud of these Americans.

There does seem to be an evilness in the air, all the stress
of the New Orleans storm, is going to set off the people who were on the edge of sanity.

I always carry a metal pen with me, in case I have to stick it in a terrorists eye or something.

That could get quite messy. There is a capillary bed behind the eyeball that would produce copious amounts of blood. Be sure to bring plenty of Handy Wipes if you plan to use this technique

I learned this in Marine Corps recruit training 35 years ago and they actually demonstrated this using me as the chokee.

I took a judo class as my gym class elective in college, and the instructor was an older ex-Marine. He showed us how to choke someone with the collar of the gi (cross your wrists, grab the lapels, then uncross your wrists, hard). He demonstrated on me, with the admonition to tap the mat with my hand if I was going to pass out.

Well, I thought I could be tough and take it and next thing I knew was waking up on the mat with him yelling at me telling me I was too stubborn....

So who brought the duct tape to the party? Is that normal airline stock?

You don't travel with a roll of duct tape? Works great for so many thing including luggage repair that I never leave home without it.

My granddad always said he could fix just about anything with some bailing wire and a pair of pliers.

What are the current security rules about Duck (or Duct) tape? I remember when, and this was prior to the 9/11 attacks, I had put a roll of such tape in my carryon. I was told by the X-ray suitcase sphincter inspectors to go back and check it as luggage if I wanted to keep it.

I think you'll have to check with Tom Ridge as he's the duct (or duck) tape maven.
