Is it even legal to just hand over the keys to city property to anyone that says they can drive a bus? Who is liable in case of an accident?

The correct answer to that question is for the state Legislature to provide immunity for any city or city official acting in good faith during emergency conditions.

That will happen about the time monkeys fly out of my butt, because this country is in thrall to a corrupt, greedy Bar, a nest of of pirates and vultures.

Lawyers kill people, as this shows. We are slaves to these despicable pirates. Lawyers are the greatest curse this country has ever suffered. I hate lawyers worse than terrorists or drug dealers, and want them all out of business. We would do better under the law of the jungle than under our corrupt, greedy, dirty, filthy, scummy lawyer overlords.

You've got a good point about trial lawyers. But there are times when it's better to ask for forgiveness instead of permission. This was one of them. And a public servant worthy of the name would've had the guts to make that call.

I take it neither you, nor onayone in your immediate family, is a lawyer.

That is correct, and I am proud of it. I'd disown my kids if they went to law school or married a lawyer.

Scum. God do I hate them.

When a Cat 5 storm is a hundred miles away from a below-sea-level city, you get in the damn buses and drive inland until you find a safe place to stay or until the fuel runs out. That is all.

Excuse me, but this is different from throwing your kids into the car and driving to whatever place looks good. We're talking around 200 buses moving 13,000+ people at a time. Moreover, you want to bring the buses back so you can haul out the next 13,000. This requires planning to have a place to receive, shelter, feed, and process the those tens of thousands of people. Nagin was/is an idiot for not using the buses; but this was a whole idiot tree because there was no place planned to receive the buses even if they had decided to drive them.

That's ridiculous. That's like asking what what would happen if in the midst of a crisis, a third of the police force said: "SEE YA!"

Yeah, like THAT would ever happen!

And any lawyer that wanted to go after the drivers would richly deserve to have a crowd with torches and pitchforks right outside of their house.

Aren't a lot of our politicians lawyers, or connected with the law in some way?

I am dead dog serious when I say that all you need to do is check on how most other cities evacuate.

I hated that we had to pile all our eldery on school buses (and duct tape them in place) but it got them out alive!

I was told in a chat room that there was no way to expect to find 750 drivers in the city of 500,000 for the 200 school buses and 550 city buses.

It is mind boggling.

They did a nice job debunking the "GHWB at the grocery check out counter" myth.

"Hmmm, take the yellow school bus or drown while depending on Nagin?"

It wasn't even allowed to become a choice. The options were to either sit in the squalor of the dome or on the roof or in the attic with flood water rising, or wait for the cavalry to come charging to the rescue, mounted on air conditioned Greyhounds. Oh, and they have bathrooms; school busses don't.

Well, I guess it's just a mystery where the drivers for all those wonderfully air conditioned Greyhounds were rounded up. Maybe they were enticed by the bathrooms on board or something.

Most anyone stuck in the Terrordome with any kind of driver's license and who was able to reach the peddles would have volunteered to drive those buses.
