The Fox News Channel's Major Garrett was just on my show extending the story he had just reported on Brit Hume's show: The Red Cross is confirming to Garrett that it had prepositioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. Garrett has no paper trail yet, but will follow up on his verbal confirmation from sources at the highest levels of the Red Cross.
The transcript of the interview will be available at Radioblogger later this afternoon.
And here is a very interesting article from Septmber of 2004:
Debate continues over Superdome as potential hurricane shelter
Seems that the debate over using the Superdome goes back almost a year, and that no one in New Orleans thought it would be a great place in a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane.
Key graphs:
"If we were to lose power, if we were to lose plumbing facilities, if a storm were to hit and create flooding in the area; the Superdome would not be a desirable place to be," he said.
The American Red Cross admits it would not stay in town for a severe hurricane. Workers would offer supplies and training to the Dome but would then leave to ensure aid for the hurricane's aftermath.
Kay Wilkins, spokesperson for the American Red Cross, said, "While we're saying we;re going to move our volunteers and staff out of the risk area into areas where its safer for them to be it doesn't mean we're not going to be here ahead of time for others."
Mayor Nagin said the city has more than 80,000 people without transportation access, and when the next hurricane evacuation there will be thousands of people who will not, or cannot, leave, highlighting the city's urgency of finding the most suitable place for shelter.
The Red Cross was turned away by troops under the command of the Governette, not the Feds.
That's odd, because I got to it through the search engine on Drudge's home page. Are you asserting that someone unconnected to drudge has put an archive link on drudge's home page?
When Blanco (D-La.) withheld food and water from the huddled masses in New Orleans, she was letting them have the Schiavo Treatment.
The reason?
It was for their own good......
Fox just said that the LA authorities "feared that the Red Cross would do more harm than good?" WTH?
No one is gonna get in trouble for "blocking" the Red Cross, because as of today, the Red Cross is insisting that it's THEIR choice to refuse to bring supplies into NO!
FEMA or the state homeland security?
All the more reason to refuse donating money to them - they refuse to provide food and water to the people most in need. THunderDome, people out of water and hungry. Convention Center, same - even the NO Chief of Police ws on tee vee with Geraldo lamenting the absence of food and waer. And the Red Cross CHOSE to DO NOTHING.
The Red Cross better be careful with asserting that it chooses to not bring relief, when said relief is staged and waiting.
I would hope we'll soon see the end of Red Cross as a legitimate charity.

Correct.
I live in Citrus County, Florida, about twenty miles East of the Gulf of Mexico.
We have had some hurricanes come through, bringing those dreaded tornadoes, and not once have we been willing to leave.
Of course our children are mature adults and all live on their own. However with two dogs, a cockatiel and every damn thing we own here, we have decided to take what nature gives us.
We have a generator that hooks up to a transfer switch. That enables us to have our well water, [yes, we actually are our own water company ;)] refrigeration and freezers, some lights and the computer. A barbecue grill, Coleman stove, a few hurricane lamps, some rechargable flashlights, a small armory and plenty of dried & canned food and we are all set.
Even in supposedly "civilized" Citrus County I have had the need (last year during Frances & Jeanne) to go outside after dark and confront strangers lurking about and up to no good.
The 870 Remington makes them understand the futility of any attempted looting.
The point of this longwinded tirade is ... If you are going to stay ... be prepared. (kind of like the Boy Scouts?)
bye, bye, Kathleen.

From CNN's Larry King.
KING: Joining us now in Washington is Marty Evans, the President and CEO of the American Red Cross. She traveled with the president today. The Red Cross is not in New Orleans, why?

MARTY EVANS, RED CROSS PRESIDENT AND CEO: Well, Larry, when the storm came our goal was prior to landfall to support the evacuation. It was unsafe to be in the city. We were asked by the city not to be there and the Superdome was made a shelter of last resorts and, quite frankly in retrospect, it was a good idea because otherwise those people would have had no shelter at all.
We have our shelters north of the city. We're prepared as soon as they can be evacuated, we're prepared to receive them in Texas, in other states, but it was not safe to be in the city and it's not been safe to go back into the city. They were also concerned that if we located, relocated back into the city people wouldn't leave and they've got to leave.
KING: Marty, everyone looks at themselves when they're working in some kind of tragedy. Is the Red Cross examining itself saying could we have done more?
EVANS: Larry, we're always looking at that and, you know, in this particular case it's the largest disaster we have ever done in the history, 125 years of the Red Cross and we are determined to do more and more and, in fact, we are.
We're sheltering just under 100,000 people right now. We're gearing up to shelter even more people. We have people sheltered in nine different states, 275 locations, so we will continuously look at what we're doing, see if we can improve it.
And, the other thing I would say is that we're breaking new ground. We're setting up new systems and processes that get rid of the bureaucracy and make it easier for people.
KING: Reverend Jesse Jackson last night was in New Orleans. Tonight he is in Baton Rouge. When you were critical last night, Jesse, some in the administration followed by saying this is not a time for criticism. That may be later but not now. How do you respond?
REV. JESSE JACKSON, RAINBOW-PUSH COALITION: Well, that's ridiculous. I mean the Red Cross' absence in New Orleans, the high point of the crisis is a disaster. It is a sin. We had no real plan for rescue and relief and relocation.
Last night we went into New Orleans to get -- with ten busses to take out 450 students from Xavier who had been on the bridge for three days and the painful part was we had to leave people who -- the human chain around the busses because they had been there four days and no plan to rescue them.
And then today we went back into New Orleans again on I-10 the causeway and there were like 6,000 people with seven busses. No bus had been there today and wonder why because across the street were 150 empty busses that had no place to take them, so no plan for rescue or for relocation. More people may die from lack of rescue and lack of food and water than from the flood itself. The people have not been very well served.
NOT. ...Let "Botox" Nancy, sHrILLARY Klintoon, Dirty "Harry" Reid, James "Jihad" Moron, "Leaky" Leahy make complete fools, of themselves. (and their party)
...let them hang themselves.
LOL! ...pic that! hehehe :D
. After the reporter ask the man if wind blew the barge into the levee or if someone guided it into it, the man said he was so busy watching the water come over the ledge he could not tell, but he added there was no water coming over the levee until the barge hit it. Then they cut away from the interview.
This was shown a day or two after the water came into NO. I don't remember what MSM station it appeared on.
My ears perked up when I heard the statement, but I never saw it again on TV.
Sorry this is all I heard.
We are brothers and I don't even know you!
Deer and feral hogs run around here just begging to be put on the table.
We are survivors!
