Dipping his toe into disaster Slow and awkward, Bush mishandled the storm's first days.

t isn't easy picking George Bush's worst moment last week.

Was it his first go at addressing the crisis Wednesday, when he came across as cool to the point of uncaring?

Was it when he said that he didn't "think anybody expected" the New Orleans levees to give way, though that very possibility had been forecast for years?

Was it when he arrived in Mobile, Alabama, a full four days after the storm made landfall, and praised his hapless Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director, Michael D. Brown, whose disaster credentials seemed to consist of once being the commissioner of the International Arabian Horse Association?

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," said the President.

Or was it that odd moment when he promised to rebuild Mississippi Senator Trent Lott's house -- a gesture that must have sounded astonishingly tone-deaf to the homeless black citizens still trapped in the postapocalyptic water world of New Orleans.

"Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house," cracked Bush, "there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch."

Only CNN could have made this up.

Good lord! They are going to keep repeating this lie until somebody believes them.

Very Orwellian.

Was it when he said that he didn't "think anybody expected" the New Orleans levees to give way, though that very possibility had been forecast for years?

And yet it never occurred to certain imbeciles who lived between those levees.

Gee you can't satisfy the libs.

They first scream that he has too much power and is running a fascist state.

Now he's not wielding enough. What do they want?

They are so pathetic.

Sounded like he just said Lott would rebuild.

geesh they left out when he got up that morning and forgot to put the toilet seat back down. Only a true Bush hater could write this kind of mythology. If Trent Lott's house got damaged, why shouldn't Bush mention taht would be fixed as well? If it was Landrieu's house the reporters would be there doing close ups on her tears.

It was pretty clear from the context of the speech that no one expected the levees to break after the storm had passed with apparently no damage to them.

"Slow and awkward, Bush mishandled the storm's first days."

Exactly right! The president made the mistake of assuming that SOMEONE was actually running LA.

Had someone actully been in charge and leading in LA the federal response would have been supportive and secondary.

Only CNN could have made this up.

And they wonder why their ratings are slipping.

"Was it when he said that he didn't "think anybody expected" the New Orleans levees to give way, though that very possibility had been forecast for years?"

I truly do hate this argument. The is a paper floating around somewhere for every potential disaster that could happen. Comet hitting earth, huge quakes in California, earth's magnetic field's reversing. So what? Should everyone move out of California? Guess what? Nature is random, anything can happen anywhere. How many storms have been touted at "The Storm of the Century" by the media...only to fizzle out or have a much smaller impact than expected. Even during Katrina, initial reaction was a bullet was dodged. Then the flooding began.

I am going to go write a white paper on a Martian invasion so I can be interviewed on CNN when it happens. But I need to remember to add a line about how it would be Bush's fault.

No Government official from Louisiana, Mississippi or the US Government has done a good job with this disaster but to claim Bush said that Lott's house must be rebuild is a disgrace.

Regarding the title: Couldn't prove it by the polls. People don't believe it. The media is singing this tune for nothing.

Oh FGS! Are they running out of Bush-bashing material or what? It can't get any more irrelevant or false, can it? Yeah, it can and will as the democrat party is in free fall.

This is from Time Magazine not CNN, although they both are owned by the same company.
