Barb is right. It's like the bum kicking a can down the street responded when asked "Whatch doin'", he said, "Movin'".

"Ever been to a housing project or a Section 8 home lately? Most of them are trash. I figure if these people stay long enough at the Astrodome, they'll trash it too."

Yes, actually. I live close to a project and around many Section 8 homes. Do you? Part of the reason there's so much trash around is that the City doesn't bother to do clean-up here very often. And yes, another part of the reason is that many people don't respect their environment or, for that matter, themselves. But it sure doesn't take a bunch of poor black people to trash a sports stadium. Ever been to one after a game?

John Kass is better than this. Royko would've bopped him upside the head had he read this tripe.

I was all set to defend President Bush...but then Barbara Bush, the president's mom...

Since when is it relevant what a President's 80 year old mother blurts in her dotage?

Since you are out to get President Bush, and if you want to beat a dog, any stick will do.

What Barbara said was STOOPID.

That being said, she is the 80+ year old wife of a former president. She does not speak for the President, she does not hold any political office.

The press really needs to move on. If this was Clinton's mother, it would probably never have been mentioned. It is a despicable tactic to use a politician's family against him, whether it's Bill Carter, or Barbara Bush now that George HW is no longer in office.

"NOTHING TO SEE HERE FOLKS, MOVE ON, MOVE ON."

She would have been lying if she was talking about the seat of the daley crime family.

Now since the southern branch has been knocked out, why doesn't he bring more north.

BTW I am wating for the trib or the sun times to do a compression be NOLA politics and chicago politics, bet there are some awful scary similarities.

" . . .the reason they weren't going back was that the city was destroyed!"

Ken, I hesitate to join in this conversation, because I think Mama Bush should probably have been a little more circumspect. Much as I like her.

However, I spent most of yesterday working at a church-sponsored hurricane shelter near Fort Worth.

The stories are horrendous, the people traumatized. I talked to many. Over and over, they said what Barbara Bush said. They want to find their families, they want to resettled, and they never want to go back to New Orleans. And it's not because it's flooded.

They're asking about jobs, they are gracious and appreciative and ready to start over.

These are people who came straight to us from the Superdome, not screened, still in the wet clothes they had been wearing for a week.

I wish them the best.

Observe the fanatical overreaction of the left. He has re-concluded that President Bush wants to KILL black people because the President's mother made an insensitive remark about the disadvantaged being better off in the relocation facilities. Last time I checked that would not be the criteria for a genocidal, racist, mass murderer.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

Based on my read of what she is saying, I have to agree with her. Many of the people stuck in N.O. appeared to be poor. These people are used to relying on government for everything...food stamps, welfare, housing, school buses for evacuation (unfortunately for them, Nagin screwed up the last one). For some people, it takes a significant life changing event to pull them out of the status quo. These evacuees have it rough now, but they had it rough before. It will stay rough for awhile, but they now have a chance to do something more with their lives. People all over the courtry are trying to help with housing and jobs. The libs don't care anymore about these folks. The libs prefer to continue government handouts...it will get them some votes. People need to realize they can not count on government to always be there. People need to fend for themselves. This a chance for a new start...now the best of circumstances, but still an opportunity.

"and no, things are not "working out pretty well" for the victims."

Umm, they aren't dead and they have a place to stay until they get back on their feet...I would venture to say that, yes, things are working out pretty well. idjit.

Well, I certainly cringed when I heard her remarks. Its a little like telling someone who has had an infected leg amputated that now you don't have to deal with that thing you can just go right on out and dance on your prosthetic replacement. Might be true, but it glosses over a lot of loss and suffering.

An ill considered remark, by an elderly woman, but not indicative of where her true heart is, unfortunate in that hay will be made, and the people who are suffering will be used to make points. sad.

Barbara Bush isn't the first person to have said this - it was public knowledge last week when these "refugees" were being transported out of NO - "I ain't neva goin' back!"

Give them credit for some sense. Even Dim voters aren't dumb enough to want to return to a city below sea level whose coastline is disappearing, making it unlikely that anything can save New Orleans from hurricanes fifty years from now.

As inelegantly as he stated it, Hastert was right. There's a real question of whether we should or even can rebuild New Orleans. The levees are needed to hold back flooding. But the levees actually cause far greater problems by holding back the sediment that would otherwise have kept New Orleans above sea level.

It's a bad idea to keep throwing money at NOLA. Rebuild the ports and make it an industrial area. Put the population on high ground. Leave the French Quarter and add some casinos since they like that stuff so much.

I have family in Houston and my brother told me that they had to close Astoland after opening it to them for a free time of fun. Tip of the iceberg?

Appears to me the stuff they're trying to sling on Bush isn't sticking...

..so now they've turned to his 80 yr plus old mom.

I find their attempts to 'get Bush' disgusting.

It's not a matter of whether what you said is true or not, it's a matter of whether it passes the PC smell test. This didn't.
