It's a good business. Goats and sheep can be taught which weeds to eat, even in-utero. The chemistry of the plants their mother eats is transmitted through milk as well.

Very interesting.
Thanks also for the link.
I just sent for your book. ":^)

The whole key to our case is moral authority, but unless we exercise that authority by superior stewardship, we have no basis for a claim.

Here's an interesting perspective on stewardship, moral authority and the environment that you might enjoy.

Only scanned this; will take it home and digest it.

I'm dealing with escaped English lawn on my property. Growing native grasses in the nursery to fight English grass - eventually. Need to kill stupid deer first. They love eating the native flowers I plant. The stupid deer won't touch the English pea plants the pioneer ladies planted in the 19th century.

Guess the stupid deer don't eat anything written or grown in the English language.

Damn...

My process for exotic grass replacement goes sorta like this: Kill, plant native plugs, hit with pre-emergent for at least two years to establish plugs, mulch in the summer, reseed with native clovers and lotus (there's plenty there in the seed bank, I've just managed to collect some.

The hard part is weeding inside the clump of native grass, particularly distinguishing, say squirrel-tail or zorro fescue from a perrenial native fescue. It can be torture.

BTW, I've been out slurry-sealing my driveway all afternoon and a sudden flash of brilliance camest upon me...

You see, it's about 500 feet long by 12 feet wide and in a LOT better shape than the county road, which isn't any bigger in many places. So what do people do but "get lost" heading down my driveway. It happens about three or four times a week. I've got just the ticket.

That 12' driveway needs a double yellow stripe right down the middle, with a sign at the top saying NO WAY.

If they're gonna be confused, it might as well be total. OTOH, I'll bet a good many will run off the right side of the road trying to stay off the line.

Oh well, maybe it's a good thing I'm not rich or I'd be truly dangerous. Ya here that Meester Rockyfeller?

I don't have the time to tackle the English grass the way it should be done.

The English grass really, really likes the river bottom soil, while it avoids the dry, higher hill-ground where the native plants are doing well. I have a forest buffer between the river bottom and high ground, so that may be the reason the English grass doesn't venture beyond the river bottom area.

I'll probably move native grass plugs this fall into the river bottom and see if it takes in spring or is overwhelmed by the English grass or eaten by the stupid, big fat deer that's probably gained 4,000 pounds eating my plants.

I don't know what "hit with pre-emergent" means or reseed with "lotus," Is "lotus" a California plant?

ok... tell me: how the HELL do you kill off muscadene vines???

they are doing their level best to kill my pines, destroy what lawn and bushes I have, tear out my fences, and are otherwise occupying space I'd rather use for a stand of native-species bamboo.

slash-and-burn did NOT work.
