Time to get a gun?
Chicago Tribune ^ | 09/06/2005 | Eric Zorn

Time to get a gun? Along with our powerlessness against nature and the fecklessness of the government's response to a crisis, a third frightening aspect to the tragedy of New Orleans has been the breakdown of civilization in the disaster zone that accompanied the snapping of the so-called thin blue line.

Among the questions it prompts in my mind is one that is old and unresolved: Should I own a firearm?.

Thirteen years ago, when Los Angeles was up for grabs during the rioting that followed the acquittal of police officers charged in the Rodney King beating, the images of shopkeepers unprotected by police staving off looters with rifles knocked me off my comfortable anti-gun perch. Who wouldn't want a firearm under those circumstances? And who knows where such circumstances will occur next? .

It's hard to bring this up again without sounding like one of those cackling vigilantes who would gladly shoot someone swiping a bicycle out of his carport, or one of those basement-bunker survivalists besotted by paranoia..

I resisted back in 1992 and still rely on 9-1-1 and a pitching wedge under the bed to protect my family. But the rapid descent from crisis to chaos to anarchy in New Orleans was another reminder that paranoia can come to look like prudence in hindsight.

You are welcome. My wife loves it. I carry it when we're out. The grips are fantabulous. We've never had a jam... it's EXTREMELY RELIABLE.

Our night stand weapon is a Sig P226 in 9mm, with four backup 15 round mags in the drawer.

Mossberg Persuader.... 20 ga if you're not used to the recoil of a shotgun and don't plan on practicing a lot. You might need to get off a second shot. A 20 ga will stop anyone entering your home.

"Oh, brother. He ain't coming around. He's been debating it for 13 years.

"He'll go on debating with himself about it for another 13, or until Los Angeles slips into anarchy, then he'll just start windmilling with his wedge."

To buy a gun or not to buy a gun
That is the Question...
Whether 'tis nobler in the eyes of my fellow gen-x'ers to suffer the rape and degradation, yea even death, of myself and loved ones, or buy a gun and take arms against the sea of evil; and by opposing, end it...blah...blah...blah...

The man is a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y pathetic! The fact that the idiot can make a "brainer" out of a "no brainer" presages the fact that if he _did_ have a gun, he either wouldn't be able to use it or would do something stupid and impulsive with it. Let him keep grazing on his thoughts. Walk on.

It's a Glock 27 in .40S&W. I did have her modify her grip some. I really wanted to keep the slide from biting her.

Yes, I am very proud of her and thanks.

When you don't have a gun, you are taking your life in your hands. Especially when you are White and the marauding mob is Black.

if you feel the need to announce yourself, do it by throwing something into the room to draw their attention AWAY from you...

Maybe, but that won't tell me how they're going to react to a shotgun.

I would bet this fellow has had a sidearm for some time but doesn't want to mess up his nice guy credentials.

They had problems, all right, but they were holding the solution in their hands. For a few it was bad, the LAPD disarmed them and then their shops were looted and burned, sometimes in front of the police.

Racking a pump 12 will scare off folks who have never heard it before. It's genetic, I think. I have seen that work.

I have a childhood friend who is a genuine fanatic academic Liberal who gets blue in the face about the evilness of guns. I happen to know that he owns and practices with a 9mm browning. He thinks it's a secret.

In close quarters in the dark the home turf advantage may compensate

Ever try to swing a golf club in a narrow hallway?

Anyone know about gun laws in NJ

Good luck. Most folks just don't tell anyone and figure arrest and trial is better than getting killed.

Not really. If the dude is high on PCP or METH he may not even notice that he has been killed and forward momentum can get you killed way before he succumbs. A 357 has a fair chance of knocking him down or at least throwing him off balance to give him a moment to consider the hole in his heart.

Civilization is as thin as an onion skin. Barbarism, on the other hand, goes right to the core.

Theoretically yes. I have seen reports of a perp continuing to run and function for up to a minute after having his heart shattered by a 12 ga slug at close range. As I said, a 22 isnt optimal, but handled correctly and with the right ammo, it is nothing to sneeze at.

I have a snake-eyes that I got for snakes in the woods. It's a side by side .45 officially but .410 fits nice. The shells leave an 1/8 inch of barrel in front of them so the group is not very tight. When there is a 13 inch copperhead slithering in the grass 3 feet from you this takes care of the problem without having to be so accurate as to be able to hit a string. It is now my bedside piece.

When guns are banned then gunownership does equal crime.
Lefties want to get all the guns away from the citizens because their vision of the good society is them as Rulers.

I was wondering about that, how do I find out about local (public access) ranges that I can go "practice" at?

Hey, Squantos! I've been playing with my 870. I got a short tube w/iron sights and rem-choke. I have a rifled choke in it. I can smack a bowling pin at 80+/- yards and it pattens 00 buck ok at 25 yards. Any downside to shooting the shot through the rifled tube that you know of?
