Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Do you know for years I thought the Skipper had been in Robin Hood. I've never seen two people who looked so much alike!

RIP Gilligan

That's one of those special pictures - if you stare at it for five or six minutes, you start to see Gilligan.

but at least now I'm thinking about Tuesday Weld.....

Did you know she was once engaged to actor Fredrick March II?
She called it off when she realized she'd be known as "Tuesday March II".

Mary Ann was a major hottie.  Those shorts, tan legs and cute little ... uh, sorry, what were we talking about?

Did they write "Land of the Lost?"

Remember the sleestacks (sp?)??? That show was awsome - but definitely acid induced.

Anyone that can make ME laugh and smile has to be a positive force for good in this world. Good Bye and God Speed Mr. Denver. :,-)

The Gilligan's Crew helped me "babysit" my Father through 5 years of Alzheimers. They and some of the other sitcoms on TV Land were about the only thing that remaind a familiar constant in his life.

Mary Ann. Definitely. Ginger was "hot", but that was about it.
Dawn Wells is still a cutie (Briefly met her about 9 months ago) Just as sweet, kind and honest in person as her character Mary Ann was.

work
WORK!
Yeah, I still live my life by that lesson learned from Maynard. :-)

My favorite one was where they were about to get off the island and Gilligan messed it up. Then they had coconut cream pie.

That was the script of every episode they ever made.

He should have been killed on the Island.

Well, so much for your career in the TV biz...

That would be intentionally Jumping the Shark.

Lord knows television has more than enough people capable of do that before there is even a concept, let alone a
script or a pilot.

That reminds me of hearing Dawn Wells describe the "belly-button" rule in effect at the time.

I remember Maynard G. Krebs.

And Dobie Gillis.

And I also remember the plain-looking girl who was always trying to get Dobie to notice her.

I understand she is a lesbian....and is (or was) a member of the California legislature.

I watched Dusty's trail when I lived in Lebanon! It was the funniest thing I had ever seen (except for Airplane!).

My favorite episode was when they were about to get off the island and Gilligan did something to screw things up. Anyone remember that one?

Ha! Ok, youngster, here's the scoop.... Please remember, I'm getting old, so I may not have it exactly right...

The series never showed them rescued, as I believe they were cancelled after only a few episodes without too much warning, the network having no idea how much of a following they really had - so, no rescue episode.

There was, however, a nostalgic effort to cash in on the cult following many years later (perhaps in the late 70's, or was it the mid-80's). I think it was "Return to Gilligan's Island" or some such title. It was a made-for-TV movie, with all the original cast, except Tina Louise (Ginger), if I recall correctly. In any event, they were all sort of "partners" in a plan to develop the island into a tropical paradise resort. They made some mention of when they were rescued, but no real details, I think. There may have been another TV movie/special, but I don't remember.

I'm sure some of the Freepers out there (or perhaps a Google search) remember better than I, but that's what I can recollect...
