'These Boots are Made for Walking': Why Most Divorce Filers are Women

Abstract:
Because of the financial and social hardship faced after divorce, most people assume that generally husbands have instigated divorce since the introduction of no-fault divorce. Yet women file for divorce and are often the instigators of separation, despite a deep attachment to their children and the evidence that many divorces harm children. Furthermore, divorced women in large numbers reveal that they are happier than they were while married. They report relief and certainty that they were right in leaving their marriages. This fundamental puzzle suggests that the incentives to divorce require a reexamination, and that the forces affecting the net benefits from marriage may be quite complicated, and perhaps asymmetric between men and women. This paper considers women's filing as rational behavior, based on spouses' relative power in the marriage, their opportunities following divorce, and their anticipation of custody.

Also, I have noticed that in the long run decent people live happier lives, even if they are impoverished, whereas selfish people may make off with the money and kids, but they aren't necessarily happier in the end. They have to live with themselves.

Can we annoy HiHeels by trying to formulate a new "global statement" along the lines of,

People who win certain contests in life are the ones who end up globally screwed?

Hello, HiHeels. Wish you'd get down off that fence and quit crayfishing, LOL.

Some women who divorce do so because of their husband's verbal abuse and threats of domestic violence. It's unhealthy for children to witness this. Often alcohol is the problem.

Since alcohol is seemingly the root of so many of societies ill's, why is it legal? I mean really, most pothead couples I know of seem perfectly happy together, and violance is rarely an issue.

They may not be the most energetic people in the world, but fairly mellow, polite, and for the most part, responsible, they are.

I am sorry to hear this... You've been through a lot. I agree with you: perhaps it is better for some people not to get married. And, no doubt, in many cases it is better to divorce that stay married. But this does not explain why people, in all cultures and religions, did stay married until just a few decades ago.

P.S. Thank you, sir, for serving the country. I wish your life were a little easier for you. G-d bless you.

Well said. I am glad to see you are both happy and accomplished --- quite an achievement, very rare these days.

Why Most Divorce Filers are Women

Forget the emotional reasons.

Most filers are women because they know they will get custody of the kids. Most men don't file because they don't wish to reduce their status to a non-custodial parent.

Men have more to lose in a divorce than women - so they file less often.

I know of a guy who had given up drinking, and for some reason went back to it. He ended up in jail for beating up his wife. You couldn't talk to a nicer guy when sober.

As a married person, what are the right reasons? Why did you get married?

All of my younger friends who are married (and going through major problems in their marriages) got married because:

1. It was the logical next step
2. The women where I live get married out of high school or go to college for the Mrs. degree
3. Rebound, nuff said
4. Every one else their age is getting married
5. Want to have sanctioned sex in the eyes of the Lord
6. It's what is expected of them
7. They are in love with the idea of being in love (then subsequently panic when they realize that yes, a good marriage takes work!)
8. Parents pressuring them

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I thought people got married because they are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. I've seen enough of troubled marriages to know that there are a lot of unrealistic expectations out there.

.Prenuptial Agreement

It's a sad world when it comes to this. If you don't have TRUST in a relationship/marriage you have NOTHING.
If whilst contemplating marriage you are already wary of what may happen IF you divorce than my advice is not to marry at all, because you haevnt found that special someone.

Why do the following lyrics start playing in my head when I read through this thread?

Better Man
Pearl Jam

waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop
tell him, take no more, she practices her speech
as he opens the door, she rolls over...
pretends to sleep as he looks her over

she lies and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man...
she dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...
can't find a better man
can't find a better man
ohh...

talkin' to herself, there's no one else who needs to know...
she tells herself, oh...
memories back when she was bold and strong
and waiting for the world to come along...
swears she knew it, now she swears he's gone

she lies and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man...
she dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...
she lies and says she still loves him, can't find a better man...
she dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...

can't find a better man
can't find a better man
yeah...

she loved him, yeah...
she don't want to leave this way
she needs him, yeah...
that's why she'll be back again

can't find a better man
can't find a better man
can't find a better man
can't find a better...man...

Nope, no male bashing here. But you can put me in the fold for getting a divorce to SAVE myself and my children also. Not going to get into it here, but again, everybody's situation is unique unto itself and unless you walk a mile in that person's shoes, I would refrain from judging.

EXACTLY!!!

Prenups are for people who are planning for failure.

Some folks should simply never get married. They aren't up to the commitment.

Last Kansas lady I knew shot coyotes for fun....

Last Kansas lady I knew was a chemical engineer turned reservoir engineer. Liked to climb all over drilling rigs -- and get some guy to take her pitcher while she was standing on top of the crown block 110' above the drilling floor, or out on the end of the flare boom, 60' above the Gulf of Mexico (no net). And she plowed all her savings into a herd of cows back home in Kansas that her brothers and sisters kept for her. She knew how to feed 'em and how to breed 'em -- knew all that bulls-and-cows stuff. Adored kids. And was a delegate in her church synod, and definitely not a wacko commie-pinko lesbo-man-hater.

Some states, people still raise 'em right.

Doubt it. Were you my ex-wifes lawyer? You know, "he's not sensitive enough, sniff, just because he's overseas doesn't mean he shouldn't take care of your emotional needs....sniff. How much is he worth....sniff".
