Saudi Arabia: Stand-off ends as police storm hideout

Riyadh, 6 Sept. (AKI) - Saudi security forces have stormed a building in the eastern city of Dammam, where militants had been holed up since Sunday, bringing to an end a three day stand-off which has left at least eight dead. There was no initial confirmation of whether the terror suspects inside the hideout were killed or not, but security officials said the building is now under their control.

The stand-off began on Sunday when a gunman being tracked by members of the security forces opened fire on them near a supermarket, sparking a gunbattle which left two militants and one police officer dead.

The fighting turned into a siege when other militants barricaded themselves into a villa on a busy street. During gunbattles on Monday another three militants and two police officers died and the US Consulate in the neighbouring city of Dhahran was temporarily closed over security fears linked to the fighting.

However, despite previous claims that they wanted to take their time and bring the gunmen out alive, the security forces moved in on the building on Tuesday and after gaining control, local residents have now been allowed back to their homes as troops searched the area for any explosives.

On Tuesday the Saudi newspaper Arab News cited unconfirmed reports as saying that the militants killed on Sunday were Nos. 3 and 12 on the most recent list of wanted suspects, issued by the Saudi Interior Ministry on June 28. They are named as 31-year-old Zaid Saad Zaid al-Sammari and 21-year-old Waleed Mutlaq Salim al-Raddadi, both of whom were thought to have been living in the al-Kharj area to the south of the capital Riyadh.

Let me guess...all suspects dead? I don't seem to recall too many cases recently where the Saudi security forces left anyone alive to talk...

It's ironic that the Saudis are now experiencing the fruits of their brand of Wahhabi Islam.

They created a cancer that's now trying to kill off the body (the Saudi govt).

The question is: Do they understand what's happening here?

"hideout"

I thought only villains on TV shows had hideouts.

When does someone's house or apartment become a hideout?

I wonder if any of the thugs on HBO's "The Sopranos" have hideouts?

I know that Tony & the guys hang out at the Pork Store and the Bada Bing, but those locales could hardly be described as hideout's right?

What about real life criminals? What level of bad-guy must one be to rate having a hideout, versus a crib or even a lair?

Are the thugs allowed to have feature? Or, are they required to crouch down below the level of the window, but off to the side of the door?

Just wondering.................
