This thread is for Katrina news and updates.
When we left yesterday, there were 50 still there. Today, "my" little family of 5 were to leave for Houston. A church group had found a job for the dad (house painter) and a house to live in. Ms. King, the wheelchair press on nails lady, will be leaving soon. FEMA told her to stay put til her check arrives. She will be going to relatives in Atlanta.
The shelter is requesting no more food or clothes. They are running out of room! So cool...
Most of the requests are for personal items the evacuees need. One lady needed a special type soap, some needed reading glasses. Ms. King got a new wheelchair. Our church is doing the lunch shift tomorrow and I'll find out more. Rumor is that we might get 50 more this week. Thanks for asking. :-)
After reading some comments on other threads here about how lawless, shifty, lazy, ungreatful, etc. that those posters percieve these folks to be, I figured we must have gotten the cream of the crop! All I've seen is people who need help. All they own is in a trashbag or two. They are embarrassed to have to ask for anything. One dad got teary eyed because his little boy wanted a Happy Meal.....dad couldn't go get it. We did and had the dad give it to the boy. The smile on that kids face lit up the place and the dad couldn't thank us or hug us enough. For a Happy Meal!
Mike and I celebrated our 35th anniversary in July...he follows FR almost as much as I do(when he has the chance) and he knows Im addicted..LOL....I do try to give him the weekends...LOL
Stubborn, huh?
Well, I am a big believer in things happening for a reason...I don't know anything else about your life, but I have a feeling there is some reason, since 1992, other than your MOM living longer,
that you have ended up staying with her. I hope that doesn't sound weird. I guess I just believe that God works in ways we don't always know...
Happy 35th. That's quite an accomplishment these days. Pete is getting to know "who" various freepers are when I mention their screen names.
I remember when I first "came out" and talked openly about people on FR. At first he looked kind of worried as he thought this was a typical chat room. Which I guess sometimes we are :-)
HOORAY!!!!
I won't hit you over Michael Jackson.
But he is a PEDOPHILE.
Nothing else he does in life matters in my opinion.
not wierd. i am convinced i have grown as a person for this. i am frustrated a lot but know that God will work it out for me in a much better way than if "I were in charge".
It has been a humble pie experience, to say the least.
It's a nightmare of epic porportions. It's changed the face of this small Southern town, forever. It's changed my perception of our Politicians, forever. I've never felt so betrayed in my life.
Firstly, we ARE a small town. When the dead vote we only number about 50,000. We are over 50% black. Our resources are limited. This last mayoral election should have said it all. The only reason I didn't vote for the black Mayoral, DEMOCRAT canidate, was because he was radically prejudiced against white people. This white, republican Mayor won by the skin of his teeth. We can't afford him, don't like him, and he has done nothing but build monuments to himself. HAD that opponent done anything we could build on, we would have elected him.
As it is now, I'm supporting a recall effort!!!!!
Whoa! What am I missing?
We have to put over a million people somewhere. I don't know where you live, but I've noticed the northeastern states have taken relatively few evacuees.
I'm proud that our state has opened our arms (South Carolina) and although I know a lot of those people have problems that are alarming, being out of the inner city environment will be good for their kids and give them a chance.
In all honesty, though, having said that, if this was happening in large numbers in my town, I'd be concerned. I'm a NIMBY, I guess.
Our 35th is Sept.12th
dang...I got married young! lol
Happy 35th anniversary - 6 days early, Jrabbit.
Me too....I was only ten...LOL....
Thanks! :-)

Can you please tell me what you are referring to in your post about the President saying he want to help and adopt a family....and that it makes you want to throw up.
I don't understand who you are angry with...and what you are angry about.
I am NOT in any way being critical...I really want to know what you are referring to.
Exactly. Well put.
