This thread is for Katrina news and updates.
I think they're pumping the floodwater back into the lake, right? Still, what a pollution problem!

"Bill seems saddened. The guest refused to blame Bush....Bill tried his best, but, alas, the guest actually knows the laws and the constitution. Better luck next time, Bill. Keep it pithy."

Jacksonville Democrat: "Why is the federal government missing in action?"
By JEFF BRUMLEY, The Times-Union
MACCLENNY -- U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown on Monday joined the chorus of voices blasting the federal government for its response to Hurricane Katrina and vowed to ask tough questions at the highest levels.
"I'm going to Washington today to find out what's going on there," said Brown, a Democrat, Monday morning at a rest area on Interstate 10 near Macclenny.
When she arrives in the capital, Brown said she would contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
"I want to know: Why is the federal government missing in action?" Brown said.
The "Operation Help -- Katrina Relief Convoy" carried several tons of food, water, clothing, toiletries and other items needed by communities devastated by the storm.
During the stop, Brown said the U.S. government has done a terrible job of responding to the crisis. Brown also criticized the use of the word "refugees" to describe hurricane victims.
"They are not refugees, they are taxpayers, and I want to know where is their government?" Brown said.
Brown said she would start those inquiries immediately.
"And I don't want all these excuses," she said.

Louisiana school teachers displaced to Texas by Hurricane Katrina could soon have jobs one state over. The Texas Education Agency is making special accommodations to allow retirees and displaced Louisiana teachers into classrooms.
Education Commissioner Shirley Neeley says that in the coming days and weeks she expects as many as 70,000 evacuee students to enroll in Texas schools.
More than 6,000 such students enrolled in Texas schools last week.
The Texas Board for Educator Certification today approved a measure that would expedite application and background checks on potential teachers.
Teaching certification records in Louisiana, which were kept online, were spared from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.
Applications fees will be waived for Louisiana teachers looking for similar employment in Texas.
If you watched O'Reilly last night...you will know, that his show and talking points were all over Bush...and for days he has actually been saying that the Mayor and Gov. shouldn't be blamed....
Last night, I even posted about his show...I was livid.
Then, this afternoon, I was waiting for Rush's show, and I turned on O'Reilly's radio show for about 5 minutes..and his first talking points was that "we have done some investigations on our own"...and went on to say that
the Gov. of LA..Blanco HAD TO CALL PRES. BUSH before the storm hit, so it could be declared a catastrophe and get federal help...just the OPPOSITE of all of the news reports.
So, tonight, I turn on his show...and he has done a 180!!! He started ragging on the Mayor and the Governor, and even started reading the evacuation rules that Rush and all of us have been reading for a WEEK...and finally, had on a guest that reinterated that Bush COULD NOT go in, unless asked by the governor BY LAW, and she wouldn't do it.
HAH!!!!!
Happy 25th Anniversary
Mr. & Mrs. Peach!!!
About 200 children from New Orlreans started school at Our Lady of Mercy School in Baton Rouge. Alexis Keppel, 6, raises her hand in her first grade classroom. At right is her cousin Emily Gioe. September 6, 2005
Kaitlin Folse, 7, hugs her mother, Pam Folse, while waiting at Dutchtown Primary School to register for class on Tuesday. In all the family had five children to register from class after being displaced from their home in Metairie.
You would have loved Brit's show tonight...Major Garrett spelled out chapter and verse how the LOCAL governments messed up NOT Bush...
He even said that the Gov. didn't sign the required paperwork to get all the help she needed, because the form was "too complex"...LOL
Even Charles Krauthammer behaved...he must have gotten some e-mails since last night!!!
I hope you and Mr. Peach had a wonderful dinner together, and enjoyed getting away from Katrina AND FR for a while!!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY YOU NEWLYWEDS!
mark for future reference
Hillary has already made her appearance today.
Shoot, even Cindy Sheehan's crowds were pre-screened before her TV appearances!!! For sure!
I don't know, the ratio of what is being pumped in compared to the overall volume of water - how bad can it be?
you know Oprah is such a complex woman. humble background. Hard work. overcoming terrible odds.. and her "friends" happen to be liberals. I wonder what she would be like if SOMEONE , ANYONE could get her for 48 hours & feed her some of the truth.
She has a heart of gold. She is very talented.
My mom watches her religously every day. I don't do TV so that is okay but when I bring in mom's food etc she loves sharing about what Oprah did today.
This is what they all say. But they have no cars, no money, and where are they going to go? Folks the SA, ARC, and religious organizations set up shelters in specific areas adjacent to the expected landfall BEFORE the hurricanes hit. They can set them up in nothing flat. There were shelters these people could have been and should have been bussed to on Saturday. The nursing homes and ventilator patients from hospitals should have gone Friday. NHS Max Mayfield warned and warned.
I have been watching that "water" going through those pipes since yesterday, and I just am grossed out...that is disgusting!!!
forgive me if I am being obtuse.. what does your tagline mean?
May I join you in wishing a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Peach and her groom!
