LET ME START by saying that if I had my life to live over a thousand times, the one thing I would not change would be my race. I am proud to be a black man. There are times however, when I wish that certain people and I did not share that trait.
For the past few days, the whole world ... well, at least those who have access to satellite and cable television, have been seeing pictures of the virtually total devastation of the cities of the U.S. Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina. An estimated 90 per cent of homes in New Orleans have been destroyed by flood waters and more than 100 people have been confirmed dead.
We see people standing on the roofs of their submerged homes desperate to be rescued, others being airlifted to safety, and we have heard tear-jerking stories of families losing their loved ones. But in all of this, we have also seen the really dark side of black people.
The day after the hurricane passed, there were reports of looting but network reporters had been saying that people were looting out of desperation, in search of food and water. A lot they knew.
The pictures I have been seeing are of people - black people - stealing shoes, diapers, and television sets. Not food and definitely not water. Not unless the armfuls of clothing, shoes, and appliances I see people wading through the streets with count as food and water.
Now, if all the looters were looting out of desperation, how desperate were the guy and girls I saw toting several boxes of size 13 Nikes? How desperate was the fellow with the stack of diapers? What, is it that he has several babies at home suffering from loose bowels? What am I talking about, what home? Everything is under water and what isn't, has been totally destroyed.
Plasma TV?
And just what are those guys stealing the plasma television sets going to be watching when there is no power in the entire city?
Desperation? Yeah, right. I am beginning to believe that black people, no matter where in the world they are, are cursed with a genetic predisposition to steal, murder, and create mayhem.
The entire firearm department at a Wal-Mart department store, for example, was cleaned out and the looters used the stolen weapons to rob people. How low is that? Everybody is suffering and the black people would seek to rob people who are suffering just like themselves.
No white looters?
And it has nothing to do with poverty. Where are the white people in all this? I am sure there are poor white people living in New Orleans, Biloxi and the other towns affected by what has been going on. Is it that the media are not showing pictures of them looting and robbing? Or is it that they are too busy trying to stay alive, waiting to be rescued, and hiding from the blacks.
And you know what? Even if the poor whites were looting and robbing, wouldn't it be nice if the blacks could have made them the only ones doing it
Just once, I would like for us blacks to take the high road in situations like this, where instead of showing our darkest side, we put our best foot forward. But I guess that would be too much to ask, too much of a case of wishful thinking.
Only a black man could get away with it.
I guess it's better than, say, "The black side of dark people..." (Hey, I'm dark!)
He should have gotten some American beer so he wouldn't need an opener!
Not yanked yet...
"Beer is a good choice. It is is a sealed bottle and is full of carbs."
I read an article Sunday about life in the Superdome. It said that "while babies cried for food, the men sat around getting drunk". This broke my heart. If there was looting, why weren't they taking boxed milk, babyfood, or clean sheets and pillows from hotels? Where were the REAL men?
So? Why are the most racist sites on the internet interested in this ONE article of his? He writes all the time for Jamaica Star.
Sure, why not, and not just race. I am embarrassed daily by the actions of some men assisting children. I am embarrassed by Tim McVeigh(?sp) being described as a white conservative. I am embarresed by Ted Kennedy as not only a white, a man, a human (that might be a stretch). I am embarrassed and angered by anyone committing a crime in the name of Christ. They are NOT Christians. Note: Mudslimes do not condemn other mudslimes. I am proud to be white but in most of the PC culture that is a racist comment. You can only be proud if your black.
assault not assisting. I hate it when the spell check drop down box scrolls after you leave it if you don't click on something else. You get weird result like assisting instead of assault
Yes, and blacks on the whole have a higher % of people incarcerated than whites, they commit the highest % of crimes, have higher % of poverty and the list goes on....
My point was that since there are plenty of white folk on welfare it doesn't mean that being black is the problem. The system that keeps people needing government assistance in order to live day to day.
Of course not, we condemn the criminals in our midst, we don't make excuses for them. What's the black leadership doing? Where is the black condemnation?
OK, I was agreeing with the author, but I guess I didn't word it correctly.
ACK!
Not enough coffee. Sorry.
Great article. Perfect, that it is written by a black man. Like Bill Cosby, blacks who speak out have a legitimacy in this day of The-Emporer-Has-No-Clothes that others do not in speaking the Truth. I applaud this article.
I don't think you're in the majority.
When it comes right down to it, I have contempt for the folks who try to paint Tim McVeigh as a white conservative (and white conservatives as future Tim McVeighs...), but I don't worry about his race. For me, I sort folks in to groups by their behaviour - criminals are scum, regardless of their race; hard working folks are to be respected, accomplished folks are to be admired, again, regardless of race. What you do is who you are... not your race.
As long as this thread doesn't get pulled, freedom will still reign on FR.
Who cares about the black "leadership?" The only folks I know who care about 'em are white liberals, esp. the Lame Stream Media.
My first thought when I saw the title was "the writer had better be black."
"...You are being far to kind to the MSM. I'm not so sure those pictures weren't skewed to promote racial tension, at least to some degree...."
This reminds me of an old Star Trek episode wherein an entity comes aboard the Enterprise and a Klingon ship and causes the crews to keep going at each others throats. The entity drew its strength through the hatred each had for the other. It also created situations where tensions were raised and that, in turn, caused deaths. At the end, Kirk and the Klingon commander recognized this and both turned on the entity. They told it that they could get along or kill the other, if they wanted to. The entity left the Enterprise after losing the power derived from getting its jollies and went looking for other oppurtunities.
The MSM is like that entity. It draws power through conditions it sets up and gets its jollies from covering the eventual bloodbath that they KNOW will come. They have NO accountability but garners all credit for covering "THE STORY". THAT is how they gain power. The more we turn off the MSM, the less power they have and the less power they can exert. The tragedy along the Gulf Coast, I hope, is their death nell. They are trying its best to stir the kettle of racial tensions ahd hatred. We here at FReeRepublic can see through the kaka and know better.
Where's Tennesee Williams when you need him?
