BATON ROUGE - Even as teams of engineers worked to patch ruptured levees in New Orleans, a political breach opened between Gov. Kathleen Blanco and President Bush over who is in charge of the post-Hurricane Katrina recovery effort.
One flashpoint came over the weekend, when Blanco said she rebuffed an attempt by the White House to seize control of the mounting military presence in Louisiana, including thousands of state National Guard forces under her authority. Then Bush made an unusual return visit to the state Monday, just days after surveying the damage - a trip that members of Blanco's staff said caught them by surprise and caused a certain level of consternation.
"We had no idea the president was coming," said Blanco's communications director, Robert Mann, adding that the governor was forced to cancel a trip to visit evacuees in Houston so she could meet with Bush.

In the game of political maneuvering for control between Blanco, a Democrat, and Bush, a Republican, the biggest chess pieces are the 13,268 National Guard troops from 29 states under the governor's command - with another 7,845 on the way - and the 7,000 active-duty troops who began arriving Monday under command of the regular Army and the president.

Blanco said that when the plain-spoken, cigar-chomping Honore showed up in New Orleans late last week, she thought that her worries about a lack of federal troops and resource were over. Honore quickly became a media darling and the take-charge face of the federal government in New Orleans, barking out orders to surprised National Guards members who aren't even under his control.

I am on another forum trying to stick my finger in a dam with a flood of liberal and foreign idiocy..They don't understand our laws, don't understand logistics, don't understand our restrictions on regular military in the US and don't understand that the dear Governor is in charge of the National Guard...
I have posted a few links today and abandoned the effort..
Liberals are idiots and the Governor has played politics.
Now Bill Clinton is calling for a commission ala 911.
My bet is she isn't going to finish her term.
No wonder things down there have been a train wreck from the git-go.
Sick.
He said on Friday, I will be back on Monday. When did the truth ever mean anything to Democrats??????
Blanco being interviewed on CNN.
Nagin complains that she said she needed 24 hours before she could make a decision during her meeting with the President.
Blanco says Nagin wasn't even there. But she goes on to say they (FEDS?) gave her "a complicated plan" and she needed time (24 hours) to review it.
Blanco: "We are the people who put order into chaos."
[huh? wish I had VCR-ed that comment]
Blanco: Dumb and dumber.
I agree that that may be a part of it, but the "Democrat" before Nagins' name is the main reason this inrellectual deficient, non English speaking moron has that free pass.
Build their gallows high
I would have known that this would be right down your alley. From your previous post I could tell that real soldiers are your cup of tea. Probably just like your dearly beloved, huh?
CAN DO ATTITUDE
... my national guard???
This is clear evidence that Blanco has operated under the premise that she was in charge, and that should provide some additional evidence that she was responsible for the low responsiveness in the beginning.
Another thing I heard on the Laura Ingraham show monday morning: It's really amazing how Landrieu and the other dems could get the poor, non-mobile folks to the polls to vote, but couldn't get them out of harm's way of Katrina. They only do what's in their vested interests to do.
He's the President of the United States, he can go damn well where he wants to go.
All they had to do was move them to the west side of the levee's. Not even out of town.
You are so right.
"They brought attitude alright.
CAN DO ATTITUDE"
BUMP!
She has demonstrated that she has been in charge of things. However, I don't think she's been in control, even of herself.
I saw her and two other women in a blurb on FoxNews last evening. They were talking as if this were some big social event they'd come to. I don't think she understands the big picture at all.
If this is the type of female "leader" the democrats have hooked their wagons to, prospective Hillary voters will have a lot of second thoughts.
If the military had been sitting in the eye of the hurricane, it would not have been enough.
This is outrageous. Imagine The Governor of Louisiana couldn't go to Texas because of Bush's 2nd visit to New Orleans. Can somebody please tell me why the Governor of Louisiana felt compelled to go to Houston Astrodome when as far as I know she never went to the NO Superdome?
