They do not have to comendeer what they all ready own.
??????????????
Don't forget the enterprising man who took one of the school busses, loaded it with people and drive to Houston. His was the first bus to arrive and they didn't want to let them in the Astrodome because he didn't come from the Superdome. I think they finally got in.
Looking for stats on how many municipal busses were in NO.
Any Idea?
Why, Nagin the race pimp only needed 500 buses!! I mean, 500! The fact he had access to 8,000 is pretty racist for anyone to point out!
NEW ORLEANS FLASHBACK: OFFICALS WARNED RESIDENTS 'YOU'LL BE ON YOUR OWN'
Thats true but newspapers telling them that cost 50 whole cents and they didn't own TV's until AFTER the hurricane so the peoples in NO didn't know they were suppose to get out, silly americans.
In the top photo, there are 150+ transit buses.
In the middle, 260+ school buses.
In the bottom photo, 100 large buses, which may actually be Ryder trucks. (Not confirmed.)
Total in photos is 500+, not counting unseen buses in the giant garages.
That is a long overdue question and so far, no real answers. Alleged government officials of La. just divert attention when asked and blame Bush and FEMA for what happened. So far today, I've seen Foxnews ask this question many times and only a few have tried to defend not using the buses.
In before the ban ?
I find it hard to believe that FEMA can go from doing such a bang-up job here in Florida a year ago in response to FOUR hurricanes, to a totally inept agency.
I still have yet to see any measures taken by the city of New Orleans or the state of Louisiana to prepare for Katrina, *other* than declaring a State of Emergency, which gets the ball rolling on federal funds, and the evacuation ordered less than twelve hours before the fury of Katrina was felt.
Are you a left-handed or a right-handed LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget?
You may have seen one of my earlier posts on this. A multi-part article titled "Washing Away" appeared in the Times-Picayune in 2002 whiched addressed the hurricane issue in New Orleans.
Deep in the article is a discussion of buses as a means of evacuation.
A paragraph on this page mentions the union issue:
"Its also unclear whether the citys entire staff of bus drivers will remain. A union spokesman said that while drivers are aware of the plan, the union contract lacks a provision requiring them to stay."
I realize a lot of them would have been too far away, but a substantial portion would have been close enough for AT LEAST one trip. Using these buses could still have allowed hundreds of thousands to have been evacuated.
Even Positioning them to high ground, just in case would have GREATLY simplified post huricane evac.
According to this 2004 document from the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, New Orleans had 403 buses in its RTA fleet at that time, 367 in its daily fleet and 36 backup or overflow buses, and "contracts for the operation of an additional 26 vehicles in demand responsive service." So in answer to your question of how many buses were in New Orleans, assuming they were all in town and accessible, my math says:
