People have seen such horrific things in war. In Vietnam, During WWII and managed to live with those memories.

Many did; many didn't; many coped, but badly. People have different capacities for dealing with such things.

I can't imagine what you're "suspicious" about regarding the suicides.

You're right. Another thing to consider is that this is personal, the dead and suffering in NO are likely to be the friends and families of these policemen. It is personal in a way that the nameless enemy in war isn't.
