New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin was asked by MSNBC news why the city did not try to help poor people get out of New Orleans after he issued the mandatory evacuation. Instead of providing transportation, Mr. Nagin said remaining residents were directed to the Superdome "as a shelter of last resort, but the help never came." Huh?

The press release from Nagin's office regarding those who were to be sheltered at the Superdome was that the site was meant for those with "special needs" with 1 caretaker allowed to accompany that individual, it was to be a refuge of last resort and that those seeking shelter there (SD) should bring food and water to last 5 days.

Why didn't Nagin make use of school and city buses before the storm hit? Drive 'em right PAST the Superdome and out of danger.

The Sunday before the storm, Nagin was interviewed on WWL. The newscasters were asking him about how the poor could be gotten out of the city. One asked about going in with cars or busses, and he said,
it would do no good to do this, because the people wouldn't listen anyway.
I would love to know if those newscasts were taped. Even so, though, they were probably destroyed by flooding.
