You can't get to Junkyard Blog, bandwidth is gone. This is pretty dramatic statement from a General on the scene

I think I saw this guy on tv earlier today, saying he was tired of people reporting that no help was there early. He said there were guardsmen there Monday, and that you need time to set up an evacuation of an big city.
I just wish the Administration would come out swinging like this guy against this stuff, it's irritating as hell to have the liberals running loose trashing everyone.

many of them who did show up found what they were dealing with so overwhelming and dangerous or threatening to them as an individual that they made the personal decision to not risk their life until the situation made more sense to them. This sounds very much like, the cops who took a powder are not fired but will be welcomed back.
Knowing NOLA, probably the ones that were on the tube looting, also.

Is it fair to say, using the convention center as an example, that one reason it took until Friday to get aid in is the National Guard needed time to build up a response team with military police to ensure law and order because the New Orleans Police Department had degraded so much?
GEN. BLUM: That is not only fair, it is accurate.

GEN. BLUM: No. As long as there's one uniformed police officer in the city of New Orleans, we will send as many National Guard soldiers to augment, support and work in support of that lone law enforcement officer as necessary. So if hypothetically there's only one left, who's in charge? It's still that lone police officer supported by the National Guard in their role as military support to law enforcement.PERFECT ANSWER.
Atta boy General... Don't let the sleeze press bait you into a General Haig outburst.

Q: One quick follow-up. Is it fair to say, using the convention center as an example, that one reason it took until Friday to get aid in is the National Guard needed time to build up a response team with military police to ensure law and order because the New Orleans Police Department had degraded so much? GEN. BLUM: That is not only fair, it is accurate. You've concisely stated exactly what was needed, and I told you why. We took the time to build the right force. The outcome was superb. No lives hurt, nobody injured. It was done almost invisibly.
Do you hear that, Marxiststream Media?!
That is your Death Knell! Your days of disinformation and general Quisling behaviour has just been put to DEATH on the altar of Truth and Reason!
We are LESS than 6 months away from B.I.T.S., and these Marxiststream TRAITORS will be first to see what the REAL America thinks of them!

I was listening to the police scanner band featured on the Katrina thread. The guy requesting supplies reported he had 22 men abandon their posts.

The MSM and lefties have gone from silly to just stupid after their worst nightmares were realized, that in just a matter of hours, people were saved and order had been restored. They were hoping they could flog that horse for many a mile over the coming days.

I hope that sooner or later the MSM discovers that New Orleans did have a written emergency plan to cover the evacuation of the poor, but that the idiot mayor of New Orleans ignored it, and allowed the evacuation buses to be ruined by the flood, forgotten.
The city leaders had at least two full days to use these hundreds of buses to evac the poor, exactly as their own emergency management plan called for.
Here's the southeast Louisiana evac plan supplement, most recently revised in 2000.
Go to page 13, read paragraph 5. It states:
5. The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.

I was wondering how long it would take for some industrious FReeper to post Junkyard's article from Michelle Malkin's Blog.
It kinda drops a grenade in the laps of the Mayor and the NOPD.
Good on Ya, sgtyork!

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that rescuers weren't getting in the first few days due to the lawlessness and breadkdown of NOPD.
Nagin is alrady starting his coverup. Saw him early today saying that his police force was exhausted from working so many hours. I'm sure 1,000 or so will soon take an extended leave and will be unavailable to the press for comment.

"the mayor told me they're down to less than 500"
If that really reflects 1000+ deserters on the NOPD in the middle of the worst crisis in the city's history, that is just a staggering set of numbers! This is one of many aspects of this catastrophe that needs to be investigated thoroughly by an outside (federal) body. If that's really the case, someone had better make sure that those deserters never get another dime from any public funds anywhere in the USA. This needs to be pursued because otherwise a lot of them might just weasel their way into other PDs in other parts of the country.

"The real issue, particularly in New Orleans, is that no one anticipated the disintegration or the erosion of the civilian police force in New Orleans. Once that assessment was made, that the normal 1500 man police force in New Orleans was substantially degraded, which contributed obviously to less police presence and less police capability,"Is this a genuine quote?

I think it would be helpful for you to read the interview with this General regarding the NO Police force.
