Wasn't it just today the FEMA director said that he was on the phone with NO officials and they never told him there were 25,000 people in one of the convention centers? It was a place that wasn't designated a shelter but people forced their way into it.
I've never seen such ineptitude in my entire life. Ever.
Interesting story from a Reuters article this afternoon:
"HOUSTON - In the last week, Joseph Brant lost his apartment, walked by scores of dead in the streets, traversed pools of toxic water and endured an arduous journey to escape the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in his hometown New Orleans.
On Sunday, he was praising the Lord, saying the ordeal was a test that ended up dispelling his lifelong distrust of white people and setting his life on a new course. He said he hitched a ride Friday in a van driven by a group of white folks.
Before this whole thing I had a complex about white people; this thing changed me forever, said Brant, 36, a truck driver who, like many of the refugees receiving public assistance in Houston, Texas, is black.
It was a spiritual experience for me, man, he said of the aftermath of a catastrophe al Qaida-linked Web sites called evidence of the wrath of God striking an arrogant America.
Brant was one of the evacuees across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi who gave thought to religion Sunday, almost a week after the floods changed their lives, perhaps forever."

Some evacuees see religious message in Katrina
"I hope we don't see the Administration trying to push the 'we weren't asked' line, because they'll get crucified with their own document if they do."
Bush himself criticized FEMA - and your right, it would be political poison to push this de jure toe dancing.
This is the first test of a Homeland Security catastrophe and it is fair to say "Not much of a cheese shop".
And before the flamers light up - the big lesson is that DONT EXPECT THE GOVT TO SAVE YOUR BUTT - be prepared
- food, water , fuel and firearms.
That's a good point about the cameras. Although I imagine the gangsters would have beaten people senseless to get their hands on them.
Those poor women and children. The more I hear about what when on with the lawless SOBs, the more angry I get.
This great plan for the City of New Orleans we've always heard about seems to be "every man for himself".
Louisiana IS a foreign country. Only state in the nation that still goes by the Napoleonic Code (more or less).
I heard as explanation that people on their own just started towards the conventon center.
I was shocked that CNN would actually play these responses, and am SO GLAD I happened to turn from Fox (Geraldo finally got to me) to hear that very encouraging little snippit!
BTW--it struck me that the lady "Geraldo rescued" was totally prepared for the hurricane. She had plenty of water and food for her, and even Dusty! Bless her soul!
Can you post a source document for this please?
Thanks for posting that; I think I will make it the last thing I read tonight as it's lifted my spirits considerably.
Has anyone heard what they are going to do with the bodies they find? I know it's morbid but there will be no family/friends around to identify these people... which leads me to believe they will be incinerated because of disease and that's just horrible.
***Catering to illegals and nutcases is what got your state into that mess. Texas is going to end up having well more than 250,000 refugees by Monday. California, with its vast open spaces in the north, stadiums closed by enviro nuts, and unused arenas has taken... drumroll please....
750.
Seven hundred and fifty.
That's all.
This is Texas. We took point. We're doing the job. It's up to the REST of y'all to do your jobs.***
Sure, blame ME. I voted for Bush.
:)
See post #132.
Now has any of the news media addressed why the Louisiana officials didn't allow them INSIDE the Superbowl? Has GERALDO asked that question. If GERALDO had been reporting from inside the Superbowl since last Tuesday, would the outcome of this be different?
why not just have a massive federal bueracracy that has planners for us all from a central location and appoints ministers for all the cities and states, they may or may not know the geography, economy or the demography of any one particular location, but it would be far more efficient... Wouldn't it? That is what the liberals want. Remind you of anything?
Federal forces will probably be visiting Broussard shortly to explain why that's a *bad* idea.
A link would be helpful.
I don't think you'll be pleased by what you find. It is very clear that DHS had the authority to roll FEMA into this on its own accord.
Does the document describe any criteria for this "override" of standard procedure? And the presence of the term "standard procedure" indicates that the process has variables. What is the "standard procedure?" What is the "special procedure?" Do natural disasters where the state apparatus remains fully functional justify moving from the "standard procedure?"
Katrina was a natural disater, not a terrorist attack, not without some days of warning, and was not an act of war by a foreign power.
I'm certain we will make every effort to identify each body.
What I fear most is a full out, blame Bush mass funeral.
In the NOLA area, the official morgue is set up at the airport. For MS and AL, I have not received updates.
I don't buy that for a nanosecond.
If there were any credence to it, the headlines EVERYWHERE would have been four stories high, beginning Monday the 29th.
Variation on the theme already outted by Buckhead.
