U.S. commercial air carriers continue transporting tens of thousands of evacuees from the New Orleans airport to destinations throughout the nation.

Rooftop air rescue efforts continue. One rescue chopper crashed late today. Crew members are reported safe. Gunmen who fired upon bridge repair contractors were killed by law enforcement.

To date, an estimated 70 countries and U.S. businesses have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars, supplies, food and equipment to assist the United States' efforts in Katrina's aftermath. Lt. General Honore described the damage to Mississippi today, "all infrastructure south of Jackson, MS is either damaged or destroyed." Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice visited the devastated areas, and attended Sunday church services in Mobile, Alabama.

Elsewhere, Sean Penn's rescue boat, sans plug and full of his personal entourage,reportedly sank during launch in New Orleans. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) threatened to punch President Bush, and Jefferson Parish President Broussard decried that the bureaucracy of FEMA has committed murder.

All information is subject to change. Many stations are relying on their corporate parents to configure and maintain Internet streaming. Because of the intense interest in the feeds, they may be unavailable at times because of network congestion or a problem feeding the video to the streaming servers.

WWL-TV New Orleans - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. They have a secondary stream from Yahoo. WWL-TV is also offering a special low-bandwidth audio-only stream for dial-up users.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

WFAA-TV Dallas, TX - WFAA-TV is here because Dallas is one of the evacuation cities.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM (Clear Channel & Entercom) who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Gulf Coast Storm Network (Clear Channel Radio) - Clear Channel offers radio listeners across the gulf coast access to a simulcast emergency radio service. This service seems primarily focused on Alabama and Mississippi, but does cover Louisiana to some degree.

Hurricane Katrina victim George Talley, 28, of Bay St. Louis, shows a triage ticket emergency personnel have been using to classify the seriousness of victim's injuries, Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Bay St. Louis, MS. Medical doctors from Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., treated Talley for a fractured hand by stabilizing it with screws and pins. Doctors told Talley to return in about two weeks to have the pins taken out.

Curtis Muhammad is a veteran Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizer and co-founder of CLU.

I did not know that SNCC was still around. The organization goes back to the early 60's and the desegregation protests. The Greensboro,NC, lunch room sit-in was one of them. Distiguished former members include--Mayor Marion Berry, Cong. Elijah Cummings and Julian Bond.

The convergence was to call out to artists, educators, and organizers to share ideas and work in building a movement for social change. Events began Friday night at the Tulane Diboll conference center. Talvin Wilks of New World Theatre at UMASS welcomed the participants and explained the purpose of the convergence. Wilks talked the convergence’s history. In October of 2003, artists and organizers met in Flint, Michigan at the Activating Democracy Conference. There Grace Lee Boggs spoke on the need for collaboration of artists, organizers, and educators in movement building. New Orleanians, Curtis Muhammad and John O’Neal who work with The Colorlines project proposed convening in New Orleans in 2004.


Following Wilks, key note speaker Bill Fletcher, Jr., of TransAfrica Forum took the floor on the topic of movement building. Bill Fletcher, who has extensive background in organized labor, now works with TransAfrica Forum. TransAfrica Forum, according to their website, is “a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the general public – particularly African Americans – on the economic, political and moral ramifications of U.S. foreign policy as it affects Africa and the Diaspora in the Caribbean and Latin America.” Fletcher challenged progressives to participate in the struggle, not just observe it. Progressive organizers, artists, and educators need to address the sexism, racism, and classism in their work, to understand their middle class privileges and social barriers, to be a voice with the struggle and not for it. Fletcher also described the differences and similarities between Clintonian neo-liberal “first among equals” capitalism and Bush and company’s “cowboy”policies. “Cowboy” capitalism, according the Fletcher, can be summed up in four points:
a) US is a capitalist nation, and shall maintain its supremacy having no competition like the USSR during the Cold War.
b) Everyone is to be capitalist, there are to be no other economic systems but capitalism, under the supremacy of the U.S.
c) If you don’t agree, you are a terrorist.
d) The U.S. has the right to declare war on those we deem terrorists.

Thanks for a very interesting post. There's just so much I don't know about the procedures of government -- it helps to have you and others here at FR to explain and sort it out.

I agree with you on the cookie jar concept. Somehow we Americans need to break away from so much dependence, and even simply thoughts of dependence, on the Federal government to solve all problems. I do think through the years the Fed has itself greatly created this problem. Hopefully, we can all gain from the lessons learned from watching the Katrina events.

IMHO: The Federal Government is not a bottomless cookie jar, whereby each State can whine to the Feds., saying over and over again, gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. The Governors and officials in those States are responsible for the security of their citizens. The Federal Government can help whenever it can, but the Governors of the respective States must take responsibility for their own actions. If you can't stand the heat, try some other line of work like baking cookies.

As far as I am concerned, this is a HUGH slap in the face of all of the people in Texas and other states that have extended a helping hand without expectation of anything in return.

Guess they are counting on everyone to be 'PC' and go along with their Race Card tactic.

What they don't realize is that are turning off a lot of moderate, apolitical, and independent types. Not to mention some of their very own constituency. At least that's been my experience over the past week.

The majority of the population isn't buying what they are selling.
