That answered my questioned. I wondered why Nagin hadn't evacuated the people that had no means to evacuate themselves. I've just been livid with him blaming everybody but himself.
He should know better than anybody how many people in "his" city couldn't evac themselves and should have been putting them on school buses, Greyhound buses, taxi cabs, horse and buggies, horseback...jackasses. Anything to get them out.
Thank you for gathering all of this information.
INTREP - Thanks for the research
ROTFLOL!
That is absolutely one of your very finest!
Thank you!
Didn't I read where they didn't want to let them in.
Jabbar is just one of many who persevered to do something about his situation instead of relying on incompetent local and state officials to help him.
LOL, great image posting!! I knew you would like Mr. Bus!!!
Nice - giving Jabbar Gibson the praise he deserves!
Even FedX buses could have been used to save lives, their parking lot looks just like the school bus one! Nobody used any initiative - except for Jabbar Gibson!

Wonderful analysis. BTTT
The other FReepers find the good large background photos & several send me small animations to mess with.
20-year-old Jabbar Gibson should have been running the "mandatory evauation" of New Orleans.
He had that double-secret skill of his.
He knew how to match a bus key # to a bus and how to put that key in the ignition and point that school bus west and step on the gas - picking up 70 hurricane/flood victims as he drove very slowly as he had never even driven a bus before.
70 people in a 40 or so capacity school bus.
Watch the wimpy PC liberals start to claim he was endangering the lives of his passengers by carrying too many passengers.
And then simply passing the hat for gas money from his passengers to drive those 315 miles to the Astro Dome in Houston Texas!
What nerve! How selfish!
George Patton would have loved Jabbar Gibson.....
"I don't want to hear any reports of our troops holding their positions!
We are moving forward at all times - and the only thing we will hold onto is the enemy!"
-- General George Patton
Excellent post! Anyone involved in emergency planning knows that the response starts with local resources, then state, then the federal help comes once requested. It is remarkable to me that Pres. Bush declared the state of emergency BEFORE the hurricane, and had to coach the governor regarding evacuation. I just saw the tape of Mayor Nagin giving the evacuation order. He read it from a paper and had no urgency whatsoever in his voice.
Mayor Nagin was all over the airwaves today proclaiming the emergency response procedures to be bureaucratic BS. In the alternative universe of the nanny state, apparently federal responsibility is the only thing he can imagine. He surely couldn't have read his own job description or his own emergency plan. Neither did the governor.
What a great story!
And, what a fantastic young man!
"George Patton would have loved Jabbar Gibson....."
Bump that!
I bet he had a few passengers who love him, too.
But where would Governor Blanco & Mayor Nadin find drivers for all of those big empty idle Fed-Ex trucks & vans in New Orleans?
One FReeper earlier mentioned that when they have flooding in upper NY state - they just load them into the back of big dump trucks and drive them thru the deep water to safety.
They use huge dump trucks for spreading sand/salt up there with big snow blades on the front to keep the thruways cleared as soon as the first snowflakes start to fall.
Canada is even better at it.
Here's a great thread!
Jabbar Gibson must have been raised by smart and self-sufficient parents.
Governor Blanco needed 24 hours to decide between the 2 alternatives that President GW Bush gave her.
Jabbar Gibson just got the bus keys and hit the road to Houston.
"tongue in cheek" I know.
We all know that in order to save lives, citizen volunteers would do it. There are some emergencies where you just have to forget the 'rules'.
Mayor Nagin said on 60 Minutes tonight that he gave the word to evacuate two days before the storm!!
Thanks for the ping Fred. I'm glad I didn't miss this informative post.
So why again didn't the Mayor empty ALL the school bus corals to enforce is "mandatory evacuation" again? I'm only being cynical to him of course. God Bless this mess...please.
