The sad thing is that decades of welfare culture in New Orleans left it with damn few men like Mr. Gibson capable of taking command of the situation. In most communities, the men would have gotten things organized and figured out what needed to be done, and done it. In New Orleans, it seems the men were all looting and shooting, while the women and children drowned and starved and the old folks died.

Why would you waste money on getting him a CDL, when his own experience has demonstrated that such paperwork is only so much anti-competitive BS taxation nonsense, and that anyone with half a brain and ordinary drivers' license training can drive a 70-passenger bus safely? Remember, it was a CDL-operated bus that flipped over on the freeway.
He might be more inclined to study medicine, or to be a baseball coach. What right do we have to push him towards a particular outcome?

I don't know if I could actually physically drive a school bus. Doesn't it require either a commercial license, or at least knowledge of how something that big handles? Surely it's different from my little Saturn (even though they are both manual, I think).

In addition to prosecution for stealing a bus, Mr. Gibson will also be charged with driving a bus without a Commercial Driver License. He also lacks Passenger and Air Brake endorsments. He will also be charged with allowing passengers to stand in front of the white line.

I drove a 24-foot RV from one end of the country to another, towing our Acura 3.2TL behind us, and my wife, two cats, and a dog on board. I was probably more conservative than I would have been with more experience, making very wide turns, or circling the block instead of attempting a three-point turn, no parallel parking, etc., but the only trouble I had was when I wound up towing the trailer up onto a curb on a very narrow street when visiting my aunt and uncle.
The main thing you need to be aware of when operating a vehicle that size is the length of the rear end beyond the back wheels. When turning, the back wheels are the pivot point, which means that the tail end swings out far wider than you're used to with a car, and the center of the vehicle comes much closer to the corner point of the turn. So you just need to leave extra room to account for it when turning.

I watched a show on TV about training for military special forces in which the trainers put men through obstacle courses in such a way that the only way they could survive and complete the training was to find ways to break the rules. For example, they would not make it without going off the trails to find and drink water. It was forbidden to do this. Those who put survival ahead of rules not only reached the end, they reached their goal of becoming special forces.
Anyone who knows the military knows that breaking rules is usually not a shortcut to a grand career.
