THE troubled English National Opera plans to sing for its survival with the world premiere of a new opera about lesbian lovers that features nudity and sex.

ENO, which is only now emerging from a period of deficits of millions of pounds, is pinning hopes on The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, an operatic adaptation of the 1972 film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the cult German director.

The all-female production tells the story of a fashion designer, von Kant, who develops a crush on Karin, one of her models. It also portrays von Kant’s mistress/slave relationship with her mute assistant.

So this is what they have sunk to?

End of an era.

The barbarians are not at the gate, they are running the show.

So it's almost exactly like any other opera production.

I know some female opera singers that are (surprisingly) quite hot. Unfortunately, they are also professionals, and I do not expect to see them singing naked any time soon.

...Calixto Bieito’s production of Don Giovanni, which one critic likened to “a coke-fuelled fellatio fest” with drink, drugs and sex."

Apparently the Clinton Administration was inspiring for some people at least.

Renee Fleming comes to mind...

Bravo.

Only through the New Yorker reviews of his films perpetually playing in one of the "art cinemas." Self-absorbed homo drug-addict angst.

Oh yeah, lots of lesbian sex will just bring them in in droves.

Stupid people, I am just floored by the stupidity.

You want to make money? Do 'Babes On Broadway', tap-dancing, a great chorus of 'Waiting For The Robert E. Lee', do 'Oklahoma' or anything, anything but lesbian sex scenes.

For this to be successful, I would think think that these would have to be the hot thin pornography type of Lesbians that are so rare in this world and not the fat butch kind of Lesbians that we see at anti-war protests.

I will pass over the obligatory response that someone ought to stick his finger in the dyke, because I am actually watching an opera now on PBS, Die Fledermaus.

It is where the celebs make cameos--three Supremes, amazing!--and bust up the opera. Now they're singing and dancing tangoes with thighs raised on high from slitted dresses. Hot! Opera is fun the singing is great and it doesn't need a lesbo angle to attract fans.
