The absences come during a period of extraordinary stress for the New Orleans Police Department. For nearly a week, many of its 1,500 members have had to work around the clock, trying to cope with flooding, an overwhelming crush of refugees, looters and occasional snipers.

I feel sorry for them. They had to do everything. There was no leadership, and no one was doing anything. The people were looking to them and them alone until Bush took over. Now that the Feds are in control, these guys can just flip NO the bird for the way they were used.
I guess the Governor and the mayor felt the hurricane was just a little "nuisance" or just something that should be considered a "law enforcement problem."
I'll bet they're glad Bush took over that mess. If he hadn't, people would still be dying down there, and the governor would be still be screaming " It was Gore who really won the 2000 election!"

Bush and the feds are not in control. The command structure is the same with the governor responsible for the NG, and the mayor responsible for New Orleans. Active duty troops are going in only to assist with relief operations. It is against federal law to use active military personnel for policing duties in domestic communities. President Bush has presented an offer to the governor to federalize the City of New Orleans if she so desires. She has yet to act on that offer.

"For nearly a week, many of its 1,500 members have had to work around the clock,..."

They get little sympathy from folks that have served in the Military who spent 13 months in country, under threat of trained and efficient armed forces for every hour of every day.....for a hell of a lot less pay and no donuts..

I guess there will be a new clause in their next Union Contract -- that grants them looting rights and bug out rights when the going gets rough.

I think we're seeing the consequences of dumbed down, and loose minimum requirements to be a Police Officer in the "Big Easy"..... They turned their police force into a social welfare or graft program.

Morning CAP,
Yours words ring true as to the incompetents, who aready seek to blame President Bush.

There are leaders in any Police Department, though they may not wear the rank. Someone should have stepped up and took charge to thwart the lawless, looting, rapes and murders.

Soldiers who quit in combat or otherwise, are dealt with severely. So should the officers, who ran or quit with the yellow streak running up and down their spines.

When one takes an obligation as a Peace Officer, to Protect and Serve they should be held accountable for their actions. I think some of the PO's based on the hiring practices would have been better employed with the anarchists.

If Gore were President now, we would all be wearing Burkas and attending the mosque daily.

Better Yet, all you people in the other states must abandon your homes and give them to these refugees.

Mr "Mentally Unbalanced" Gore would have really F'ed this situation up.

Maybe the DNC will make a political movie concerning the looting, raping and murdering that has taken place in NO.

The title, " Hero(s) of the Revolution." Main characters, Stanko-Blanco- Mackin-Nagin and Not Me-Landrieu, to include those poor downtrodden (EMER-Card Shoppers,Murderers, Rapists)***** Anarchists*****

The actions of those thugs, will hurt many of the decent and good people of NO. (Incomptetence only breeds incompetence)
