The September 01, 2005 Press Release by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) -- in which the massive scope of the emergency responses to stricken areas and individuals in the U.S. after Hurricane Katrina are explained in details that our mainstream media generalizes over...

READ THE FULL REPORT (restricted in reprint elsewhere, thus, you have to go read the information where it's published), and notice that, specifically, the Southern Baptist Convention ("SBC") has been and is engaged in feeding thousands of meals daily. And that's just for starters.

Good news doesnt exist right now to the MSM.
They will find the last person out of N.O. and put them on TV screaming at Bush. The MSM is having a field day. They love it.

I read somewhere that the portion of the sea wall that gave way was recently reconstructed. Is this true? If so, this blunts the claim that Bush should have spent more for such reconstruction. Also, why is the reconstruction and flood control a federal issue? Why isn't LA paying for sea wall flood control maintanence?

Thes is a growing awareness among the public at large that the MSM is addicted to bad news and fault finding. Meanwhile, while the talking heads are busy becoming charicatures of themselves, most Americans rise to the occasion in a crisis and ignore the newsbunnies and their relentless alarmism.

Its called navigable interstate waters. The Fed has control of and responsibility for navigable interstate waters. The approval of Dams, sea walls, levees, and water way diversions is the responsibility of the Army Corps of Engineers.

thanks. Any merit to the argument that underfunding caused the breech that flooded the city?

**There is a growing awareness among the public at large that the MSM is addicted to bad news and fault finding.**

And for this reason the viewership of Fox News Channel goes up exponentially during times of crisis. The public isn't dumb!

You couldn't have said it better! I wish just one news channel would air the good side of this disaster along with the bad. Balance is all I ask for.

It's not even a sea wall, New Orleans isn't all that close to the Gulf itself. It was levees along canals that failed. As I understand it those were deemed in good shape when some other levees, specifically the ones along Lake Pontchartrain (1-2 feet above sea level) were refurbished by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Another question is why, today, the Army still has the mission of maintaining waterways, building flood control structures and maintaining the ones already in place. It's mostly civil servants doing the work, or rather supervising it as contractors actually do most of the work. Those civil servants could transferred to some more appropriate agency. We don't need that drag on the DoD budget. OTOH, it would take that budget completely out of the hands of the Army bureaucrats, which might also be a good thing. The only trouble is that the Army is probably way more efficient and effective than any other federal bureaucracy. Which is a pretty darn sad thing for someone who sees a little piece of the Army bureaucracy from the inside, well almost the inside.

But those canals are not interstate, nor is the protection of New Orleans from the waters of Lake Pontchartrain a matter of interstate commerce or navigable waterways.

Remember it isn't the Mississippi that is now covering NO, it's the water from the Lake. The Mississippi levees are just fine.... so far.

When asked if they will rebuild the city, Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) just stated on Fox News that the Spirit of the People of New Orleans is "TITANIC!"

She is so stupid its funny! Just thought a little humor in the midst of the suffering couldn't hurt.

Yeah, the media is sure emphasizing and repeating the outrageous distortions by N.O. Mayor Nagin and the LA Governor -- both Democrats, both responsible for the lack of coordination (Nagin even refused to allow a troop of volunteer law enforcement to enter on days one and two after the Hurricane, delayed his "mandatory evacuation" order until it was too late for many to get out, or figure out a plan, and neither Mayor nor Governor organized any means for evacuations for those who weren't able to leave on their own, among so many other grievous incompetencies) -- and yet the media reprints condemnation after condemnation about the U.S., "the federal government" and "Bush" and ignores the realities of this situation.

Much less doesn't describe all the great things taking place. I've been watching FOX and they're covering at least a broader range of information BUT...FOX is only one station. I read through Google News and it's hard to get anything decently good or encouraging there.

The news coverage on this Mega Disaster has been really awful...replaying an elderly woman growling about "Bush" serves no purpose, especially since that woman does not seem to have taken any steps to take care of herself, but it's what people seem to notice internationally instead of all the great things that are taking place, all the service and goods being delivered, all the rescues.

I just read an article about the Chief of Police in N.O. and he actually says, "no wonder we're losing the war in Iraq, if this is what we have (in reference to the National Guard who actually showed up and risked life and limb among snipers and looters and tried to help)".

I was really surprised to read that the SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) had been feeding so many thousands of people from the day after forward...we just don't hear or read about that, nor any of the other wonderful things taking place. I write, I was "surprised" because before reading this Press Release by the Red Cross, I'd never heard of these events. Pleasantly surprised, I should add.
