Qatar gives 100 million dollars for US hurricane relief 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.

Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."

Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

"Don't worry, some around here will urge Bush not to accept the dirty "mooslim" money."

Not to worry, these are the clean Muslims.

Learning, also, to help those that are helping you. Our military paid and still paying the ultimate price for their freedom.

I agree w/you, also. However, I don't see Iraq w/'meager assets'.

I was just thinking about the lack of those really good pistachios.

Sometimes I think thats one of the worst things that old Jimmah did.

Oddly enough, I once went out with a girl named Kathy Pistachio. Have a great holiday. - Bill

Iraq will be wealthy once they get the oil out and pumping free from attack.

They are like Dolly Parton in a corset. Lots of assets, but covered up and hard to get to.

"Every TV station in the Middle East is state run?"

Al Jazeera isn't. Privately run (with stockholders) They've been a source of friction between Qatar and it's neighbors for over a decade. They piss the Emir off frequently, but he will not shut them down

We beat up on the Arabs for lack of freedom of the press and then when their free press is as irresponsible and anti American as say The New York Times, CNN, the Guardian, the BBC and Le Figaro.... we complain about that

Mike-in-Iraq is dead right on this one. I lived there for four years. It's one of the more promising countries in the Middle East.

Sbotz - Thank You in Arabic is "Shukran" or "Mashkur"

All the best

Good post. People also forget Al Jazeera was the first to allow senior Israeli figures to come on and be interviewed and make their cases, especially refraining from censoring them into incoheerence as MSM have been known to do.

They also allow US and western figures to come on and argue cases.

They ain't saints, but they're no devils either. They run footage whichbb is sensational and brings in viewers. Can't rightly say as I blame them...

Al jazeera pisses everyone off - not just the US. They've been criticising Middle East governments/leaders in their broadcasts for years for their unresponsiveness and lack of accountability/transparency. Emir of Qatar has been in hot water several times - he provided about $300 mil. in seed money for the station.

No offense meant. But having watched Bremer and the CPA screw up just about everything that could be screwed up in the first year of the Iraq occupation. I'd take whatever one of them says with just a little grain of salt.

uh, sir, your half empty glass is over here.

I wonder if the folks receiving the aid will care. I kind of doubt it.

We'll go ahead and put you down for a "No" vote on accepting the aid from Qatar.

I need to paint my garage next weekend, could I borrow that exceedingly large brush you're using to paint all those folks on the gulf coast as savage and undeserving thugs.
