Mall at Sierra Vista

The Mall at Sierra Vista is teaming up with the American Red Cross to help raise fund for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Starting Monday, the mall will display free-standing donation sites with remittance envelopes for shoppers wanting to donate to the Red Cross. Shoppers can then mail their contributions to the Red Cross.

"Our hearts go out to all of the people affected by this disaster," said Diana Coleman, the mall property manager. "As a business and community partner in the areas being impacted, we want to offer our support in any way we can." The mall is owned by General Growth Properties, which will be doing the same program at all of the malls it owns and manages.

Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra

The opening concert of the 11th season of the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 23 will feature more than three sopranos and a guest conductor.

It also will be an opportunity for those in attendance to share themselves with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. An offering will be taken to assist the Red Cross' relief work in the Gulf Coast states.

"The symphony feels an obligation to support relief efforts for the many people who have lost homes, their belongings, but not their memories," said Dr. Lloyd DuVall , Sierra Vista Symphony Association president. "We're happy to help in any small in which we can."

Buckets are to be used to collect the gifts - cash and checks.

World Care collection

Several groups and businesses are collecting items for Hurricane Katrina victims that will be delivered to World Care.

The items being sought include basic first aid adhesive bandages, adhesive cloth tape, antibiotic ointment/creams, antiseptic soap or wipe packets, alcohol preps, aspirin, non-aspirin, non-latex sterile gloves, 3-inch roller bandage, sterile gauze pads, medical wound glue, liquid adhesive, vitamins, diarrhea and stomach remedies, antihistamines, antifungal creams, stool softeners.

Hygiene supplies such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, comb, antibacterial soaps, waterless soaps, feminine products, baby diapers and wipes also are sought.

Emergency supplies such as blankets, work gloves, duct tape, packing tape and boxes are needed. Food, water and Meals Ready to Eat and tarps are sought.

Clothing is not requested.

There are collection points in Sierra Vista, Tombstone, Bisbee, Huachuca City, Whetstone and Benson. The drop-off points in Sierra Vista are the Mall at Sierra Vista, Wal-Mart on Highway 90, Elks Lodge No. 2065 on Wilcox Drive, Ideal Automotive Group on Highway 92 and Discount Tire on Fry Boulevard.

Collection points also will be in downtown Tombstone, and at the Shell gas station at Mustang Corners in Whetstone. In Bisbee, the drop-off points will be Highway 92 Service Center and Hair Connection. In Benson, the drop-off point will be the Benson City Hall.

City and other fire departments in Cochise County also will be drop-off points.

Bisbee community fund-raiser

The Bisbee community plans a Hurricane Disaster Relief Chili and Cornbread Dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Warren Community Church.

The dinner is sponsored by the Bisbee Rotary Club, Bisbee Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, the Bisbee police and fire departments, and the Bank of America with help from many other organizations and individuals.

There also will be a cake auction and a silent auction. All proceeds we be distributed to disaster relief organizations and a list of those organizations will be available at the event.

High Desert OffRoad

High Desert OffRoad in Whetstone is organizing two events to aid people in the Gulf Coast area. There will be a container in the Wal-Mart parking lot this weekend to donate usable clothing, household goods or other items. The container will be hauled to Tucson early next week, and a trucking firm will take it east.

Next weekend, in Sierra Vista's Veteran's Memorial Park, a half-dozen local bands will perform; donations or contributions will be accepted. For information, call 456-9090.
