When the president and vice president rashly shook off our allies and our respect for international law to pursue a war built on lies, when they sanctioned torture, they shook the faith of the world in American ideals.
When they were deaf for so long to the horrific misery and cries for help of the victims in New Orleans - most of them poor and black, like those stuck at the back of the evacuation line yesterday while 700 guests and employees of the Hyatt Hotel were bused out first - they shook the faith of all Americans in American ideals. And made us ashamed.

I'm ashamed any institution in America tolerates, let alone condones the thoughts of Maureen Dowd. Dowd is an exercise in frustrated arrogance.

Now, I really can't stand it when people politicize non-political message boards. I've lurked on one that's become increasingly off-topic in recent months and more political--and guess what kind of people have started it (hint: what kind of people started politicizing the hurricane?) And yes, the pace has only increased recently, with the hurricane.
There's one particularly bad thread that begins with a long, not-particularly-well-written, not-particularly-well-researched rant that tells me that it's BUSH'S FAULT.
(The first allegation--overnight money for Iraq but no action--yes, literally no action--for a week! And he didn't get out to make a press conference sooner! (Yes, Virginia, there is much power in a press conference. And hm, it's written by a "I voted for Bush but now he's a 'moron' [yes, the post uses that word] type. Sound familiar?)
And only Bush's Fault--I tried to be fair reading it and just re-read it to be fairer, but between winces I couldn't find a smidgen for anyone below the federal level.
Although other people have joined the fun with other ABB (Anybody But Blanco--Nagin, whatever) Talking Points (for example, if only Bush had signed the Kyoto Treaty, Katrina would've detoured to some country that didn't sign it, or something), the only name that I remember people quoting is in something like "I read Maureen Dowd's column this morning." And Maureen Dowd never, ever lies!
I understand the need to detoxify the thread, but what did Catherine Zeta-Jones do to deserve this association with her?
CZJ married Maureen Dowd's boyfriend.
