BURLINGTON, Vt. - A former chief financial officer at Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., has agreed to plead guilty to a federal wire fraud charge for embezzling more than $300,000 from the company, federal prosecutors said Friday.
The U.S. attorney's office for Vermont said Stuart "Mickey" Wiles "used his authority as CFO to cause company checks to be issued for charitable contributions, unspecified professional fees, or unspecified legal settlements when, in fact, no such expenses or obligations existed."
Prosecutors said Wiles would then cash those checks to pay off personal expenses, such as vacations, entertainment expenses, car repairs, clothing, electronics and gifts that he had charged on a credit card provided to him by Ben & Jerry's.
Authorities said he used about $58,000 from Ben & Jerry's to pay for an addition to his home in Shelburne.
Messages left for Wiles' attorney, John Pacht, were not immediately returned Friday. Wiles' home phone number had been disconnected.
The crimes were uncovered by an internal audit at the ice cream company, where Wiles worked from 1998 to 2004. A follow-up investigation was done by the Internal Revenue Service. A call to a Ben & Jerry's spokeswoman seeking comment Friday was not immediately returned.
Wiles could get 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, though his punishment is expected to be less severe, in accordance with federal sentencing guidelines.

I have personally watched 3 thriving small businesses get run into the ground by crooked bookerpers and seen another lose $200,000+ over a 6 year period by a crooked office manager.
And all the while the owner was absolutely positive the people were doing a great job for them. In the latter instance, even when given proof of the embezzelment he refused to believe it. It was only after she left (she died) that an accounting by the new hire showed the extent of her actions. Just freakin' amazing how often this goes on.
Let it happen a few more times and maybe Ben & Jerry become conservatives.
