Louisiana Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, who has been working with search and rescue, confirmed that 30 people died at a nursing home in St. Bernard Parish and 30 others were being evacuated. He did not give any further details.
Along this line, there was a report of nursing home residents being robbed and then turned out into the water-logged street by looters, who the staff surmised were looking for narcotics. They stormed the place, robbed and hit residents, then just yelled, "Get out! Get out!" while brandishing weapons. The staff loaded the residents in wheelchairs and began pushing them out into the water, where they were all later rescued. Don't ask for links, I heard a nurse relaying the story on one of the news channels (WWL?) a day or two ago.
