President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

FNS - Chris Wallace hammering Chertoff during interview, showed a clip of Chertoff saying he didn't know there were thousands at the convention center Thurs. who didn't have food and water.

Chertoff replied that he had a video conference with LA state officials on Thursday, and they did not tell him about the convention center situation.

Lots of vehicular traffic on the directnic webcam in the CBD. Most by far that I've seen. Looks like operations are truly in full swing win the city itself today.

Of course, I'm totally expecting a wreck at that intersection.

Jackbill provided the e-mail addresses for the two Washington Post reporters in the article I referenced previously on this thread.

Anyone interested in asking if the president tried to federalize the evacuation of New Orleans on Friday, August 26 or Friday, September 2 are encouraged to ask the reporters to answer that question.

I'm back home....no problems getting here, thankfully. It was amazing to see all the caravan of buses headed to Texas. We passed two groups of at least 25 buses and 8 ambulances taking the evacuees to safety.

Now that we are home, we have the local TV Katrina coverage. Two things I found interesting this morning from interviews on WBRZ....(sorry if I'm repeating what has already been posted.)

1. Mayor Nagin is still in a suite at the Hyatt hotel (26th floor) in New Orleans. He doesn't have electricity or water and there is not much food. When asked what he was eating, he said "What the hotel has for me." Guess he still has room service???

2. Mary Landrieu is going to be on with George Stephenoplous this morning. They showed part of the interview. She and George are flying over New Orleans and she points to a bridge that is out. There is a BACKHOE working and she goes on and on about there only being one CRANE (it actually is a backhoe) working on the bridge and how the president needs to send help. She says the word crane no less than 10 times. Amazing to me as there are still possible people to rescue and she is wanting to rebuild immediately.

I saw a film of Chalmette done by locals on tv last night. And there was that barge! And the big broken levee. The local said that barge appeared to break a concrete levee. It was near the lock in Chalmette. I don't know the area at all but it looked as if the barge made St Bernard flood.

I saw it too....the one the teenager filmed? That whole area is devastated!

"Mary Landrieu is going to be on with George Stephenoplous this morning."

I saw the whole thing. It was hard to watch. What an opportunistic skank. And her accusing MY President of taking advantage of photo ops? I could puke.

What an opportunistic skank

Her behavior throughout this ordeal has been nothing short of disgusting during a national catastrophe. She clearly cares nothing for the victims and has tried to score minor political points with her thinly-veiled sniping. "Opportunistic skank"? I could not possibly have described her better.

What is the prevailing wisdom of the Washington Post article when it references Friday; is it referring to Friday September 26th or Friday, September 2?

The letter requesting Blanco to give control of the NOLA evacuation to the feds refers to Sept 2.

The Feds didn't have any interest in controlling the evacuation on the Friday before that. Note the term is "takeover," which intimates an evacuation is underway, not just prosepctivly planned, and the mandatory evacuation order came on Sunday last week.

Did you see the barge by the locks? Was he saying that barge caused the leaking and flooding of St Bernard?

That was incredible footage wasnt it,,the kid just went in there with a boat and they shot it. I was impressed with that kid.

St Bernard is an awful story isn't it. ANd Plaquemines. Sad, sad.

Actually that was a most excellent rant. No apologies needed. This reinforces my opinion of the Redd Kross. You'd think they'd be teaching y'all CPR and other emergency procedures, but noooo, you have to watch those leftist Baldwin brothers.

The churches should just take in everyone who can volunteer, and tell the RC to go to hell. There are chores for everyone, not just people with medical certification. All you need is a heart. Hopefully you've had better luck with the Salvation Army.

Btw, good for you for volunteering!

Mary wants Bush to have "personal" leadership.

Everyone {libs} made that Bush took so long to get there.

Now Bush's visit was a phot op.

The man doesn't get any slack any way does he?

Damn them all, just damn them all.

Mary and Kathy wanted to deny the feds control and then blame them for a bad outcome.

Not only wanted, but still want, and are now actively working to obtain that end.

Chertoff replied that he had a video conference with LA state officials on Thursday, and they did not tell him about the convention center situation.

Chertoff and the other federal folks who get air time should make a conscius effort to repeat the chain of command.

"We operate only according to instructions given to us by our "superiors," who in the case of rescue are Lousiana authorities."

Our Presidents plate is full isn't it?

Dems maneuvering on every front. Want to stall Supreme court hearings for Roberts. I just heard one say they should withdraw Roberts nom and have O'Conner stay and be Chief.

Cockroaches, all of them.

Yes, I saw the barge. They mentioned it could have caused it, but they were not certain.
What a brave teenager!

I hope there are some decent Dems in NOLA keeping all the pertinent Documents from being shredded and saving the hard drives from being destroyed from the computers. They can try and destroy all the records and claim that the flood got them. If the Clintonista's are in charge of this mess we all know that they are experts at destroying evidence.

Good point. I wouldn't put it past them to destroy everything as I type. Is that why Algore was sent there? Well besides updating the NO website with pertinent information.../sarcasm
