President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

I read that, and this is the kind of guy that we want working for us. I am glad he did what he did, he went beyond the call of duty. By the way I believe Bob Sheets is the nicest of the three but they all are nice.

Yes, I think the stark inadequacy of the Democrats in this crisis will make a filibuster hard to maintain...or buy them the support they need.

I don't think that is true; the Court can hear cases with only seven members.

They should be panicked...people all over American on vacation are seeing troops flooding toward the Gulf.....five mile caravans, 200 NYPD officers, stuff pouring in....

This wont stick on Bush...these evacuees will be interviewed on all the Red State press (since no Blue States picked up the ball) and tell their horror stories of the City of New Orleans.

That's right and Clinton tied a whole lot of it up when he did what Robert Redford wanted and named the Escalante Wilderness. If any one thing cinched Utah as a Republican State it was that move.... they are talking about doing some drilling for oil in Glen Canyon.

I was thinking we might be able to do something, you know power of the freeper. I find the only questionable part was CNN saying they're out till Tuesday. But NOLA.COM does have the info.

That posting is a little out of date. Here's the latest from the interdictor:

The city is starting to feel more secure now. Much larger military and Homeland Security presence and many fewer civilians left. Of course with this added security comes additional dangers like hyper-suspicious, armed authorities. If you watch the cam or walk the streets, you see that almost every civilian is approached, evaluated for threat potential, then either patted down or left alone. The disconcerting thing is that these authorities always have their guns at the ready and look like they're enjoying intimidating the people. Two of us have already had guns aimed at us by police -- Brian by the Federal Cops guarding the Boggs Federal building while we were waiting for the resupply, and me when we were delivering the router to City Hall.

Don't get me wrong, some guys are more professional than others. You can tell the ones who took the job because they wanted to bullies and who took the job to protect and serve. That's one thing a catastrophic situation does -- it sifts people's true personalities out.

Nevertheless, aside from the arson, I think that generally it's much safer today than yesterday.

Ok, now I've got some down time so I'll try to answer your IMs and hit the IRC chat.

""What else can get thrown at this President!"
How about some more rumors? ;)

Fellow FReeper spinestein writes:
can't believe it!
First Bush sends a hurricane to New Orleans to help his rich oil buddies make money through price gouging, and now he finds a way to get Rehnquist off the Supreme Court so he can appoint one of his Bible thumping cronies to take away all our civil rights!
(I pity the fool who requires a sarcasm tag for this.)

Ok... This one is the LOONIEST of all!! I LOVE these DU idiots!

THERE IS ONLY ONE SOLUTION SHORT OF CIVIL WAR.

Retake Congress in 2006, impeach Bush and Cheney and use a resignation and appointment strategy to get either Gore or Kerry to be Speaker of the House. One of them can then appoint the other as Vice-President. Then pack the court like Roosevelt tried to. Otherwise, it's fascism or civil war or fascism and civil war.
