President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I think President Bush will nominate Joy Clement now. She is from New Orleans and has lost her home. I think she would be a wonderful Supreme Court Justice. Of course, it is too soon to talk about this and I hope no one thinks I am being disrespectful to Chief Justice Rehnquist. I will miss him and his opinions.

I believe that this is one of the reasons for all the talking points and the circling the wagons. NO and LA in General have a terribly corrupt Democrat run existence. I have noticed some areas are Pubbie and a lot of LA is conservative, but because of NO and the surrounding parrishes they can corrupt almost any election. Take away those people and spread them throughout the Country, and they will not come back. They will prosper and wonder why they ever stayed in that corruption.

Yes, most likely, since Memphis is straight up the interstate from LA. But certainly many will come up I-40 to Nashville. We've opened shelters and are ready.

The Red Cross in Madison said a couple from Kenner, La., just outside New Orleans, arrived Friday and sought some assistance.

Their 34-year-old son from Madison and his wife had been visiting the couple before the hurricane. The family evacuated the area but couldn't return to Kenner, in part because of washed out roads, and then they drove to Madison, Red Cross spokeswoman Barbara Behling said. The couple didn't know if their home survived

I wonder what Ms Mary will say after today...my guess is the silencing will be deafening or she'll say it was too late. Maybe she should take a review of US and state laws and who was supposed to be responsible early on. She may also want to have a chat w her brother, the Lt Gov, and ask him about the state plans and the money that was given to NO for the levees that was spent on casinos, private plates, etc., etc.

Samantha - speaking of Hurricane Center Directors Shields and Frank, you can add Director Max Mayfield to that list of all time greats. Did you see:
