President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"Rumors have it the primary discussion between Nagin and Bush yesterday centered on federalizing the entire region. "

Is this on blog? Or in print anywhere? I heard this reported as fact on 2 foreign channels.

When I saw Bill Hemmer show up today I assumed that they brought him in and pulled Shep out. Most likely.

One more thought - if the problem is with FEMA and Bush, why are federal operations going well in the other states?

I have to peel off of here to make a pie and some dinner for my kids, and want to voice some concerns before I go.

One, obviously fire. If the pumper truck resources (don't forget the debris filters for the inflow hoses) from the surrounding states are not already on the way in, they need to be. Don't need to say anything more than "Dresden".

Two, I know the cameras are all in NO, but I have yet to hear of any concerted effort at relief and rescue in East NO and St. B Parishes.

Other than boats, as far as I know, those folks are ALL still sitting on their roofs.

I won't be able to answer for a few hours, just wanted to touch on these things.

Think back on "Kerry". Or Al Gore's meltdown. How many people remember this? It's there in memory, fer sure; but not forebrain memory. People will remember, in time, the "racist" talk currently coming from the left as a bad memory (among so many); and the memory will go to backbrain archive.

Liberals know this. They count on this. It's what they themselves do too! It's why they seem to have no conscience. They may know what "shame" means, but they don't know what it is.

I have a concern... what do you think are the odds of the contamination of the Mississippi River in NO reaching other communities along the Mississippi. I am from the Quad Cities region of Illinois(currently living in CO) which is right along the Mississippi. I realize that it is UP river, but I wonder if that could happen?

Yes it could -- Sheila Jackson-Lee has a plan to get Congress to repeal the Law of Gravity so the contamination will flow upriver to where all the white people live!
