President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

What did Howard Fineman of Newsweek say earlier today on MSNBC? It was something so odious that my mind can't retain it :-)

I was hanging out on a serious weather junkie's forum, where a number of pro forecasters were arguing about how accurate the NWS was. Turns out, they were very, very accurate. Eye went within 15 miles of their track.

If the school administrators have any brains (debatable lol) they could set up special testing for those whose records were lost.

And when some of them test two grades below where they say they were...legal nightmare.

NBC Nightly News shows New Orleans Mayor yelling "Where is the Government?" Hey Sherlock, last time I checked, the Mayor IS the government! How stupid are these people?

all NO mayors have lobbied the feds constantly to help them with the levees. Unbelievable.

Would he be referring to what keeps being posted about NO/LA not being willing to pay the 50% with 50% matching federal funds like everyone else?

After I heard Lou Dobbs essentially call the president a racist (I did tune in for two minutes over there), I sent the nastiest yet email to CNN. I told them, Lou and all of them are worse than the rapists, looters, and murderers in New Orleons. These people are beyond sick on CNN, they are prostitutes of propaganda. They make me ill.

The Desire Project was torn down years ago.Very familiar with the place in the Seventies.Notorious even back then.Virtually all single moms on welfare which at the time was less than 100 dollars a month plus food stamps.Lots of good folks in there but their future was extremely dismal.A few of the kids got out via college and did quite well.
When Desire was built in the Fifties it was considered a big step up from the small frame houses in the Ninth Ward.By 1970,it had become ramshackle and looked down upon by the most humble homeowners in the area.

That clown will be out of office (assuming NO still has a Mayor's office) after the next election.

That was funny...she covered the lower part of her face, twisted her mouth around and whispered "St. Tammany Parish" (I think).

She was a teacher once, doncha' know!

I guess the briefing with Nagin and Blanco wasn't a live briefing like the one in MS? That was so refreshing seeing the president get the briefing as he was getting it in MS. I would have liked to see the live LA briefing.

You have a point. But SOMETHING needs to be done for the kids that have had their records lost. I'm sure someone can come up with a better idea than I have.

Yep. The people involved with the levees remind me of the French batted down in their defenses at the beginning of WWII, in defenses designed to fight the last war.

NO decided from the beginning to make sure it could keep itself safe against another Hurricane Betsy. But those in the know realize they needed to protect themselves from a storm like Katrina.

The games that get played with cost analysis...

Fineman said this the gloves were off, that Newsweek and the MSM would be blaming Bush right out of the gate, in force, a hit piece in Newsweek next week.
